What kind of fuel pressure do you get at the schrader valve at the end of your fuel rail...you can put a gauge in it like you would on a tire to see... have a rag handy...you should get in the lower 40's for psi.
Is the starter working? From your description, it sounds like the engine is not turning over.
I wouldn't be too worried about fuel pressure if that's the case.

I tried to jump - that had no effect.
However, again, one out of the 15 or so times I tried starting, the car did start. It was in neutral at that point. Not sure if being in neutral was the cause though, since one-week ago, trying the same shifting through gears, it started in park. Plus, most of the time in neutral, it didn't start at all - it might just be coincidence.
As far as the starter is concerned, would it start at all, if the starter were at fault?
If you look at the videos, when it starts, it starts fine and very normally. But when it doesn't start, all you hear is the buzz of the fuel pump.

My thinking was that something was up with fuel pressure...thus the no start and I was thinking to check the fuel pressure- but usualy these intermittent no-start issues are electrical...either bad grounding (battery cables) or actual ignition switch where your key inserts...I don't know though- for it to start the fuel pump, that may not be it.

Could I eliminate the PNP switch as the problem? Wouldn't the car have had shifting issues before if that were the case?

Another thing I noticed was that when I go to start, for a millisecond, it will sometimes go from Sport to Econ and then to Winter, sometimes just from Econ to Winter - but always to winter, and of course, there is no response from the engine at all.

Terrence,
I had a similar problem with the same car - 98 V70 AWD. I ended up bypassing the PNP switch and it has been starting fine for 3 months or so. I had no other PNP symptoms other than not starting. I changed the key switch but that didn't help. It turned out the starter solenoid was not getting power to the small terminal. The terminal is under the intake manifold so it's a little hard to get to. There is a bypass "test" connector in the triangular fuse box and I connected a wire from it to the small terminal on the solenoid and that fixed the problem at least for now.

If you have a voltmeter, try checking the voltage at the small terminal when the key is turned to start. If there is none, this might be the problem.

Thanks, I'll try to tackle this tomorrow following directions in your previous post:

Will you eventually change your PCP switch, just to be on the safe side?

I'm amazed you found that thread. I was going to post it but it didn't turn up when I searched.

Yes, I'll probably change the PNP switch when the weather gets warmer. Right now I am working on front suspension issues. There are some threads on changing the PNP if you decide to do yours.

I will do the PNP when it gets warmer too - it's 15F now with snow and I want to get the car on the road and get the awd to pay back at least some of all the tires it eats.

I can visualize the blade (small) terminal on the starter solenoid, but not the other terminal (switched side of the starter relay). Tried getting the diagrams to open, but it conked in adobe. Maybe you can give a better description of the other terminal that the jumper wire needs connecting to?
Much obliged.

Jumper wire should go to the small blade terminal. Unless the solenoid is bad or current is not getting to main starter terminal, this should kick the solenoid in and cause the starter to crank.

Here is starter pdf file from 850 manual and a photo of the top of the starter and solenoid. The wiring diagram in the pdf is pretty good.
