Re: 2001 V70 2.4T ATF simple Drain and Fill...

Post by E170_Driver »

Well, I have driven 500 miles since my drain and fill. The ole transmission shifts smoothly and I had no issues during my trip. I checked the ATF level before I started the engine for my return drive from Indianapolis and it was lined up right on the COLD line. Mathematically I should have had 25% of the original fluid left in the unit and figured that my trip to Indianapolis and back ought to give the ATF enough time to mix well. I decided that one more drain and fill should determine in what shape the fluid would truly be, in addition to reducing the original Volvo ATF down to 12%...
...while draining the transmission it was obvious that the ATF was almost flawless.

Comparing the ATF after the first drain (left), second (middle) and third (right) one can clearly make out the discoloration (left) after at least 50,000 miles (don't know if the stuff was ever changed - 138,000 total miles). The color became much better after drain number 2 (middle) and then flawless after the third and 500 miles (right). I shook up the containers so one can see the true color of the fluids (the bottles in front respectfully contain the milk jugs ATF and are colorless).

In conclusion, the drain and fill method was very easy and straight forward. I am very satisfied with the results and after returning 3 qts back to the dealership the whole process cost me $63. As mentioned before, the original fluid was by no means burnt or in any way in bad shape, but certainly discolored. Now that I have done the ATF replacement, I will keep a good eye on the fluid level and looking for any leaks in the future. The shifting of the gears is very smooth (did not have any issues prior) and I will do this again in about 50,000 miles.

Looks like Jan did a good job w/ 130Kmi? Drain/refill/drain..

I on the other hand have a 03/V70.2.4T and did a 12qt. flush /refill..as described on other posts here..
I used 11 qts. 3309. and have a had mostly smooth shifting BUT once a day it will over rev as in "stall speed' in my old race car. Thanks. 92,000mi

I could take to Rusnak in Pasadena but they (tech) forgot 2 Engine splash pan bolts, on a recent repair $1700., front end bushing etc. (ext/warrt) so I am looking for a GREAT VOLVO dealer in So.California

So these trannys have no filter in them?
I did the fluid/filter change like E170 talks about in an old '99 Sable a few years ago at 70K miles, it looked dirty when I dropped the pan, the filter looked worse. Did 3 drain/fills.
The Sable is now history, my wife has an '01 S60 w/90K on it that we bought new. Tranny fluid has never been changed.
A few years ago I bought an '02 V70 with 79K on it. The Volvo dealer had been servicing the car since new before I bought it. The previous owner had the tranny fluid changed every 30K.
Guess I'll go to the local Toyota dealer and get a few quart for the S60.

@Jim, no filter. MVS member Velorider added a Magnafine inline transmission filter on his wife's S60. Should be very similar to your car if you choose to follow his lead.

@Jan, sorry I'm late to the party, I have to say this is an outstanding writeup. Added to the Repair Database.

Has it had the software update done to disable the stop-neutral function? If not, get it done soon and save your transmission!

Don't think it has ever been done, the car has only been to the dealer twice. Once when it was a week old for a new rear main seal and the second time for the fan controller recall.
What is the "disable the stop-neutral" do?

Every time the car stops, it essentially drops into neutral. The intent was to save gas/wear and tear on the torque converter, but in reality the only thing it does is cause more wear & tear on the transmission internals and eventually is the cause of destruction of most 2001 transmissions.

Thanks for the info and link. I saw your writeup on how to test to see if the update was done. I'll try it on the V70 too.
