I am thinking I would not need to swap the cluster since the clock/temp display is already capable of displaying the trip computer information.

Would I need to reprogram anything else to match a replacement ECU? I don't really know, but my logic (or possibly faulty logic) is that if I get an ECU from another 98 S70 NA that the only difference would be that the trip computer is enabled.

I realize that may be an ignorant assumption, thus the question..... :)

This is an interesting topic and its something i've wanted to do as well. Mine currently displays clock &temp display. I do have access to a volvo computer for free so i wonder if i bought the info switch and got my ECU updated, would it work???

You have a '99 right? It's a networked car. If you have access to a Volvo computer (i.e. VIDA), you'd need to order and pay for software part 9438259 ("Trip computer system") after installing the switch. It cost me about $300 with it did it to my S70 a few years ago. On the networked cars (post-'98) there isn't another way, sorry to say.

I know the dealer just updated their software to the most recent version, hopefully it might already have the Trip computer system software on it as well. If it does i'll hook it up and try. If it doesn't have that part of the software, i dont think i'll pay the $300 to get it installed. Cash is tight. Cheers..

Has anyone swapped in a trip computer into a 1996 850 GLT? Somebody is selling the trip computer in the classified section and I've always wanted to have the mpg display on this car. This thread was asking about doing this swap to a '95 but I'm asking about swapping into '96. Is the hareness different, will it fit...ect.? <I'm looking for info like that before I shell out any clams.

Yep, I've done it on both of my 96 GLTs. You need to get the computer, the INFO switch, and the little harness that runs from the computer to the switch.

It is a great upgrade, plus you can stop pushing the reset button on the mechanical odometer and maybe spare the gears if they haven't broken already.

In '95 there was an evidant break in the trip computer. Most '94's have the small thin wires like in the first pick of the thread, as was on his '95. My '95 has the newer connector like on the '96 cars. I have both trip computers sitting here. If you want either, let me know. Your car likely has the 2 green socket plug in's in the back of it. The switch for the '94 cluster does fit in the back of my '95 cluster (I just checked, I have a cluster in my closet). The '94 switch is a little square compared to the '95 - '97 switch. Let me know if you need anything.

The green socket that matters is in the trip computer itself, his car won't have it because it doesn't have the computer!

Best is to just pull the little wire harness and the computer together, then you know they are compatible.

Well, it matters which cluster he has. The never cluster connections wont work with the older grey ribbon style trip computer.

So, I have both compters and the switch and harness that should work with both. That's all I was saying.
