drivers window stuck in down position

OK...Two Things...

First of all, I feel REALLY stupid for giving x70 advice on an 850.
I was completely messed up with that! My very bad! Sorry...

Second thing. Pull the door panel off and start messing with the window lift mechanism to get the window up?
Are you kidding? That's WAY more work that just bypassing the switch and raising it with the motor!
And you could really frack something up doing it that way... A ton of things could get broken.

Just raise that window with the motor the way that Volvo intended, without risking
door panels, clips, window registers, fingers, etc. Then fix that switch!

Yes, you can. I smashed our "parts" 2002's window trying to steal the crank for the other one a couple years ago. I got the crank, it just made a big mess all over the garage...

Nonetheless, the wires are the same, just removing the switch panel's different.

I am having the same problem, started today. The window on the passenger side is stuck about 5 inches down (I was tempted to put it all the way down, guess something told me to stop, thank goodness). I have a 99 Volvo V70 XC. The pictures further up in this post, are they what I need? I do not undertand what "reverse polarity" means.... Sorry, I'm not stupid, but I'm not that mechanical. My husband has gone away for a few days, so I have to fend for myself on this one. If I successfully get the switch out, and clean it and by luck, do get the window to go back up.. is it fixed, or do I still need to replace the switch? I was thinking about that anyway, this is a 2nd hand car and the switches are just gross, so maybe this is my chance..... Thanks for any layman's guidance.

I don't think they're painted, I think its a colored plastic (could be wrong 'cause I have a '97 850). The volume knob on my radio is sticky and tacky and I'm guessing you have the same situation.

Attack it with Windex. Mine look pretty crappy too, I have no idea WHAT they used on them, but at least that gets some of the stickyness off.

Yes, try cleaning the contacts first...make sure your ignition isn't on

The switch panel can be lightly pried out of the door as described above. If this doesn't work for you, just to get the window up for now, pull the plug and find a small piece of wire and try to jumper the contacts you see on the side - one way will roll it down; reverse that, and it will roll up.

In regard to passenger window stuck - I should feel just silly. I got it down - by leaning over to the passenger door and putting it down with that switch! Duh!

But this does confirm my main switch on the driver side is starting to fail, so in that sense this was helpful!

Today my rear passenger window was also stuck in down position. Luckily it didn't take me long to fix it.

1, Use a screwdriver to pop out the black switch.
2, Disconnect the cable.
3, Use a thin screwdriver to pop open the switch - I used two screwdrivers actually, you need to pop open two holders on one side at a time.
4, Clean the electronic contacts using Alcohol and contact cleaner.
5, W40 to make the white parts move freely.
6, Put everything back.

I think that's all you need! I think the same procedure also applies to the driver window switch.

Thanks so much for the advice guys...

I was driving home from work last night and rolled my window down, to find it wouldn't roll back up...
took the switch panel out and scrubbed the contacts with an old toothbrush, and the window rolled right up

I had the same problem 3 days ago. After 20 minutes of cleaning, my switch works like new. I cleaned the connections just as described by Jblackburn and Axlaxl in my earlier post (see V-70 rear passenger windwows & it's link). I used toothpicks and rubbing alochol to clean between the connections. Roll the alcohol soaked toothpicks in place and you will be amazed at the amount of dirt/grime that comes out.
