Re: How to Replace Front CV Axles - 2000 V70XC

on the outer end of the big part of the axle. what is that big ring gear that appears to have no physical contact with anything else? because when i was replacing my wheel hub assembly i noticed that mine was cracked in half and longer fully seated on the shaft. I am worried that this will turn into a more expensive fix. please help. thank you.

The thing that looks like a gear is the reluctance ring for the ABS. In needs to be properly seated and it needs to completely encompass the outer part of the CV joint. If it has slipped out of position you might be able to glue it back in place but I'm not sure what kind of glue to use.

If it has broken and no longer encompasses the entire circumference of the end of the axle then you really have no choice but to replace the axle or you will have constant ABS problems.

The ring isn't important mechanically, it just triggers the ABS wheel sensor.

Bumping this post.

Do I have to use a new axle nut/bolt or it's ok to put back the original one? It's the small one for 2003+ cars.

Volvo wants you to change the bolt but since it isn't angle torqued on the later models I just used some Loctite Red and reused them. My rule is that if the bolt gets angle torqued it gets replaced, if not it gets re-used.

Thanks to all of the above I was able to remove and replace the passenger side axle on my '07 C70. However, at low speed there is a high pitch noise that I suspect comes from the carrier bearing. I did apply grease to the bearing before installing the axle. I also suspect the squeal is coming from the side of the bearing as it rubs against the inside of the bracket. Is that likely?

Any thoughts on how to stop the squeal?

The way the carrier is made it shouldn't be able to contact the rotating part of the bearing at all. It should clamp around the outer race on the bearing and hold it stationary. Did the carrier bearing cap fully mate to the other side of the carrier bearing flange when you tightened the cap back down? If not, it is possible that the axle isn't fully seated into the transmission.

Check the metal dust shield and see if it is contacting the rotor on the bottom. Please don't ask how I know this.

I have the same problem as richyoung. No matter how hard I lever, I have even tried using a high lift jack, the left hand shaft will not budge. Any ideas or tricks out there?

You have to give it a good pop to get it out, I use a pry bar and wood against the transmission case.

I was in your country in the 80s, crazy time. Great people. Don't get confused with Nambia, though.
