Normal compression pressure is in the vicinity of 200 PSI...If there were too much blow-by the pressure would be 'way down because that is what blow-by is, leakage past the rings...There will always be some blow-by, even in a new engine, but abnormal blow-by is not happening here...Something is amiss in the PVC system, either a clogged port in the engine block, or a clogged hose, or a check valve installed backwards...

Valve stem seals do not allow blow-by and they do not seal against compression pressure...They keep oil from leaking down the valve stems during the intake stroke when there is a high vacuum in the combustion chamber...Even in a badly worn engine stem seals are not involved in the compression/blow-by picture...It is during the compression stroke that blow-by occurs and the valves are closed during compression...

I've been driving several months with the dipstick ajar ~1/4 inch. More than that and oil splatters all over. I have a catch can I got of eBay to put on, but I have not had a chance to install it yet.

If you want to know if the PCV is working, just pull it off from the intake tube and start the car. You'll know right away if it is working by the vapors pouring out. I replaced mine and it is working, but I still get pressure buildup. I'm assuming I have excess blow-by from abuse by the previous owner.

I'm in the same boat as OP, but I've taken some precautions. I've installed a catch can on top of the dip stick tube, using a large side-fed fuel filter, and then put a PCV on the output side.

The whole contraption is maybe a foot long, and I'm using it until my IPD kit arrives next week.

I hope it does me right.
