Since the high-RPM driving seems not to have helped it, the Seafoam or AutoRX might clean up some gunk on the valve stem that might be keeping it from closing.
Are you recommending Seafoam in the crankcase or through the intake? I am thinking crankcase on the chance it will free the lifter, not sure though.

If I am to try the high revs again, should I unplug the injector for #2?

You can add SeaFoam in three places; gas tank, oil and suck it up through a vacuum hose. I'd go with all three to really give it a thrashing!

I'd at least do the oil and intake manifold.

I don't know that unplugging the injector would do any good. You would want that cylinder firing to clear the crap out of there the Seafoam gets out.

I like the idea of the cylinder blow down to find out were it is leaking from. Remember to do a wet compression test (little oil in the cylinder, table spoon full or less). If you have a leaking valve or ring the readings will come up two to three fold. At 100k it may be due for second timing belt. A few more bolts and the head is off. If it does needs head work, remember "tighten the top will loosen the bottom" Hone cylinders and rering. Hope this helps. Jon

OK compressed air says it is definitely on the exhaust side.

I ran the Seafoam-in-the-intake drill, then put some in the crankcase. Spirited driving didn't do anything but I'll give it another little while for Seafoam to work a miracle in the oil, free that phantom stuck lifter

In response to useful comments about doing the timing belt: all timing components, water pump, many other items are already replaced in the engine exchange.

Sure seems like bad luck :( .... The whole reason I put in this engine goes back to a burnt valve (in #1) on my 200k motor. Now another burnt valve??!! Guess I won't know until the head starts coming apart. That won't be right away, time to pack the Toyota and head to Colorado.

I find myself wondering if there could be an air-fuel problem so that it is running lean and burning valves. But unlikely, it as running so well last 2 days and never any codes the last year other than P030x.

No change after driving it around today. Still zero (really zero) in #2. I'll have to park it for a while and get back to it after vacation.

OK after a couple weeks limping around town on 4 cylinders (I unplugged injector #2), no change. So I started opening it up expecting to do a head swap for a burnt valve.

I have the cam cover off now, have been checking out under the lifters on the exhaust side. The washer (valve spring seat?) that sits between the lifter and the valve spring, on #2 exhaust side I can just turn one of those washers by hand and even compress it a little with my fingers. All the others are all rock solid.

(1.) Is this a broken valve spring?

(2.) If it is a broken spring, do I go ahead and pull the head or just replace the spring? I have a rebuilt head here ready to go, but I don't have to use it. Sure would be nice to not crack open the head. But can you do a valve spring in the car?

On the other hand, I found a fair bit of sludge under the cam covers today, so even though this engine has only 100k it didn't get oil changes as often as it should. And it sat at the junkyard about a year, in the warehouse. Is a broken valve spring a sign of abuse and poor condition of the head, or just bad luck?

I don't think throwing seafoam at it willy nilly and running an italian tune up is a great idea. Just pull the cam cover and see what's up in #2. This is why I like fixing the motor I have instead of doing the jy swap. Its the devil you know. You'll get it sorted out. Its just parts and time. Good luck

I didn't see or read the last post about the possibility of a broken Valve spring. Sounds quite possible, even probable and might explain the partial compression. Yes, you could just pop in a new spring. To do so you will need a device like a Schley tool that is used in the on-head valve stem seal replacement or a creative home brewed alternative. all you need is the windowed piece from a traditional valve spring compressor (for getting the keepers out)and a lever that is bolted to the head and which willact as a hinged lever. The bigger the cheater on you lever the easier it'll be.
