Vacuum Elbow/Lines Question

Re-routing if necessary to bypass the fragile OEM setup, like the one that goes from the PTC nipple to the Super Evil™ passenger side (North America) manifold nipple. The one that throws a P0172 if it's not on.

Where does the vacuum hose go to from the intake manifold? I have a non-turbo. Is it easy to get at to replace the whole hose and re-rote it across the front?

That intake manifold hose goes to the PTC. Your N/A Volvo might be different. Nothing about it was particularly difficult or hard to get to.

The only worry is that I'll forget about it and have a panic when I see the unused ends on either side of manifold. I'll take care of that when I do the PCV system.

It attaches to the flame trap snorkel near the throttle body.


I can't find the good image of it on the site, BUT you can see where it attaches to the throttle body hose in cn90's picture below. Look at the part that says "Twist this counter clockwise to detach from intake elbow".

Also, a good thing to do is to take that hose loose and throw out the filter disc inside - it creates clogs in the PCV system and serves no real purpose in these 5-cylinder motors.

Can you show my the details on your "fix"? I'd love to see pictures of both sides of where the hose attaches. I'm guessing this could be the cause of my P0172 code.

I think I may have fixed a P0455 gross leak problem. Bad hose on top of the canister.
Different hose/elbow, one that attaches to the air tube right immediately after the MAF. Rubber elbow, hard white plastic line leading to another rubber line that kind of seems like it is going under the turbo heat shield. Anyone know where the other end of the rubber portion connects? The elbow has been replaced but the rubber line feels crumbly and should be replaced too. I've got a very stubborn P0171. Left side nasty elbow looks good and carb cleaner sprayed there has not effect on motor idle speed.

The gas mileage on my 98 V70R had been dropping a bit, and then it started throwing that P0172 code. I found one disconnected vac line (the one to the sensor above the radiator) but P0172 came back. After reading this and a few other posts I closely inspected that elbow on the intake manifold below the thermostat and yup it looked very deteriorated. Confirmed that was the problem by spraying some carb cleaner on it. So i ran some 1/4" line to replace it. We'll see over the next week whether the code comes back.

I'm not going to say a P0172 is always that elbow... but it's always that elbow.

Okay it's been three weeks now since I replaced that vacuum line. CEL came back once after three days and I cleared it. Been good ever since. Gas mileage back up to where it should be.

Hello, first post here and I see this elbow hose is a very common issue. Just got the part and seems near impossible to get it back on with my hand size even with coolant hose moved. Any other suggestions outside of moving power steering pump? I do like the "Re route" idea posted but where does the other end off the hose connect to? And where can I grab the line from?

I use a super long-nose pliers for the hose on that nipple on the intake manifold.
