If it's sticky solenoid then a couple of good hits always helps. Until it dies completely.
That starter is crowded in there under & behind different tubes and such. How to access for testing?
Usually starters don't die mechanically in a second, they torture you for some time. And you hit it with crowbar :) So you really want to check that solenoid connector first. It is quite doable on N/A engine, little bit more tricky on turbo, but still possible. Don't forget to put your gloves on.

Thank you all for your great additions & inputs. Alot of stuff has come up so it will be next week before I can get to it again. Have been driving the old F-150 in the meantime.
For sure I am trying out everything, and will get back to the thread with the results.
Thanks
b!

Found some time to do a bit more wrenching on this V70 lack of cranking issue. Here is where it stands at the moment:
- checked the fuse associated with the starter. It is good.
- checked all of the relays, especially the starter circuit relay, and all relays click good for integrity and beep good for continuity.
- tried jumping over the ignition circuit with a jumpwire from starter relay spade 87 touched briefly onto engine compartment (+)/hot battery terminal to see if solenoid activates. No it does not. And I made sure that the engine battery terminal was hot beforehand.
- pulled the v70 onto a slight slope with the pickup, then let it roll downhill in order to pop the clutch to fire the engine. ( Yes, this is a manual 5-speed transmission). Yes, the engine fired up right away at the first attempt to pop the clutch.

My conclusions so far:
evidence points squarely to the starter being at fault. Because access is really difficult for my large hands, I will need to schedule some time to pull away all of the hoses, airtubes, and other stuff surrounding the starter to get access it. At this point, from the information yall have provided, I guess it is a bad solenoid wire contact, or else some deeper issue in the starter motor.
So progress is being made.

Your comments & remarks are welcome. And thank you for the very useful information you all have provided until now.

SATISFACTION !!
Long story short, turns out it was the connections into the solenoid. The two copper terminals grew a bit too oxidized to carry current. Cure? Easy fix: terminals were wire brushed and sandpapered clean, then everything reassembled. My V70 fired right up good as new. It was not the big electrical mystery I had expected.

Tip for those who face this same starter issue - remove the fan shroud from the radiator in order to create enough space to access work. Use a small mirror to see past the large tube thing coming off the radiator so you can see what your hands will have to do.

I want to give credit to all of you who have provided information and moral support, giving me the confidence to get this done. Thanks a million all of you.

Well done.

For me this issue was a $300 lesson(tow + repair) so I wanted to spread the word.

Curious, I have same issue, won't crank, but jumping the starter relay pin 87 to 30 cranks fine, but will not crank with key and is not starting even when getting it to crank by jumping direct. So what else to try, any suggestions, connection to starter is fine.
Thanks

You need to get VIDA in your toolbox and diagnose you immob problem, it’s not a starter problem, obviously,
