My mechanic said that he ordered the one for 2000 and it was a different size (or enough of a difference) that he could not easily retrofit it to his 1998. He is a pretty dynamic guy so I would imagine that he is right. He was told that one of the issues with this part is that it can get baked pretty good based on it's proximity to engine/exhaust heat so he has no idea why the end can't be bought separately for a 1998 but can for the 2000
I would call (or ask your mechanic to call) CDS and ask about the front coupling kit for the 98. I bought one several years ago, so i know one was available then. It was about $250 then. He's right about heat failure - the coupling is close to the the exhaust.

Sorry to digress but I need to ask people who have gone the other way, i.e., converting the AWD ---> FWD a question re fuel mileage on highway:
* AWD = _______ mpg
* FWD (by removing driveshaft) = ______ mpg

As a starting point in going from AWD to just Forward Wheel Drive I can give you a comparison of my experience vs. my other v70 that is an original FWD. The AWD without the propeller has my car roll back on a moderate hill when at a stop light whereas my FWD stays in place with no roll back.
Might be just my experience but it can be a hassle (for instance I have to deal with this everyday at the two lights on my way home and have to be careful especially if the car behind me is close to my bumper).

Just to provide a little bit more context for future references to the post there are two shaft lengths in the 1998 model and the ends are different (the VIN should be used to ensure you get the right one). Also replacing the ends seem to be a short term solution as the other end and middle most likey will fail over the next year or two. Also CS can get you the 1998 end separately for about $130 so it is available.
