My Volvo was missing the propeller that connects the back wheels to the transmission when I bought it. My mechanic has an extra propeller from 1998 XC with a bad front shaft joint. He said that he could not find a new shaft joint kit for a 1998, but they make one for the 2000XC ($350). Does anyone know if the 1998 propeller with the new shaft joint will fit my car. The alternative would be paying $800-$1000 for a new set up.
Thanks....Mark

If both vehicles have a 'Y' as the 10th digit of the Vin they should be swappable.

Hate to say it, but there's probably a reason it was removed in the first place. Unless it was just the original shaft that failed, there's a good chance the angle gear is dead or on its way out. Mine went kaput many years ago, but I just removed the main shaft. Been running my XC without it for years now with no problems. It still performs well in light to moderate snow.
I'd just hate for you to spend a bunch of money on a drive shaft, only to find out there's an even more expensive repair for you to do.

I can attest to that. I put in a drive shaft I picked up from a salvage yard that was in good shape into my 1999 V70xc. Putting that in there revealed that the old one was taken out because the bevel gear was going back. Now I have AWD, but also the noise of the bevel gear. I Plan on looking for a donor for thatnow. Just be prepared for it to open up new opportunities for you to work on your car!
If you can't laugh at yourself, someday you will be the only one not laughing.

Check Colorado driveshaft. They sell a refurb shaft for 1998-99 AWDs for $410 with $100 core deposit. I dont know the price for 2000 but they do sell one. I got one for my '98 several years ago and it is doing fine. Based on their website i think the 98-99 and 2000 are different.

Thanks for the heads up about my the propeller being taken off for other reasons and here is what I know:
-I had a transmission leak and it was due to a bad seal(fixed)
-while doing this my mechanic found that the connecting sleeve of the bevel gear was toast and replaced that and also filed down the splines which mushroomed a little from the damage sleeve.
-The propeller shaft that he has is in good condition except for the front shaft joint (cost= $368)
-What my alternative is buying a new propeller set up for $545+$32 shipping from Colorado Drive shaft (since I don't have a core I lose out on the $100 core deposit).
Just have to think about the value of paying an extra $200 vs. the time spent fixing a used propeller shaft that already has ?? miles on it.

If the mechanic is willing to sell the used shaft cheap, you could use that for core charge. Probably he would want $100 for it:). When mine went bad the first time i got the front joint kit, but it went bad again after a year or so. Then i got the refurb. The CDS refurbs have the joints and the center bearing checked. I think they also sell the joint kits. One other item- you'll need the bolts that hold the shaft on, unless yours are still there.

The OP's car is a 98. I would want to check to see if the joint kit for a 2000 would fit the 98. There used to be a joint kit sold for a 98.
