I think it was 2013 when I used the Permatex on the pan flange, hasn't leaked. I came very close to getting an admission from a Permatex rep that the Volvo "real thing" is made by Permatex. The person did tell me that the Permatex product is rebranded by several vendors.

Anyway, it's what I used topside (cam cover) and on the pan flange. Use a foam roller and roll it on, not paper thin, but the build doesn't need to be real thick, either. Just make sure the flange is cleaned thoroughly—all the old stuff removed with a utility knife blade held at maybe 10 degree angle. Then wipe it down with 90% isopropyl alcohol. You can also squirt a line of the stuff all the way around, going around the bolt holes, then lightly roll that out to cover the full width of the flange. Working time is practically unlimited since it doesn't set up until it's deprived of O2.

Like I wrote in the other post, make sure you clean the bolt threads thoroughly with a thin wire brush AND get a tap to clean out the threaded holes in the block (including the long vertical bolts and holes at the back end). Then you can ensure even tightening all around, starting from the middle, working across, then out towards the ends. Half tighten first time around, then firm them down. The sealant it designed to fill small gaps if any. On a Volvo pan, the flange is milled perfectly flat, as is the mating surface on the block, so assembling the pieces clean, with clean bolts and bolt holes, you should have a perfect seal.

If you can let the block drain overnight then wipe out any residual oil from around the flange edge of the block, you'll avoid getting any oil on the pan flange when you replace it.

BTW if I remember correctly, the last 2 digits in the Permatex number refer to the size of the container, not the composition of the glue.

Here is what I acquired today, only one place had a tube. The image of engine mount is to show the bolt in lower right corner that I can not get to so mount can be removed to make pan installation easier.

The Volvo anaerobic is made by Loctite.

If you look on the Safety Data Sheet for Loctite 518 it says this:

2. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
LOCTITE 518 IND 6ML
2096062 2096062 United States
Anaerobic Adhesive None identified

If you look at the Safety Data Sheet for the Volvo anaerobic it says this:

2. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Anaerobic Gasket Maker 518
495539 37530
United States
Anaerobic Adhesive None identified

Notice the Volvo is described as Anaerobic Gasket Maker 518 meaning it is Loctite 518

They are both manufactured by Henkel AG of Germany

The Permatex will work just fine as it is 518 also, but they do not manufacture the Volvo

Added all part numbers to title for search

Confirmed that the loctite 518xx products are all the same content, the xx denotes package size

Loctite recommends using their Klean n Prime # 37509 as an activator for anaerobic sealants
