The only interest I have in the vehicle is to fix the AWD before giving it to my mother. She already has a fwd car.

I won't dispute AWD > FWD in winter

But FWD with snow tires >>>> AWD and all season tires

AWD does nothing for braking traction. First snow fall and it's mainly Jeeps in the ditches, too overconfident in electronics and AWD and no season tires

Scot850: I've heard about all weathers, let us know how they work. I'm dying to wear out my all seasons so I can get some proper summer tires.

Finally got the key last night so I'm going to see if the car can be driven. If so, I'll post back what I feel/hear. At that point I will need repair guidance. I'm prepared to order a shaft from CDS, hopefully it won't need much more than that.

Hmmm, what does this mean? I was thinking about , ordering a shaft today, pulling the shaft that is now on the car and driving it a few days until the new/ replacement shaft arrives, then installing the replacement shaft. What does "load" mean? Will that make installing the replacement shaft harder after driving the car with the shaft removed?

I guess the best way to try to explain what I was trying to say is that the AWD components, without the prop shaft installed, aren't either exerting any torque or having any torque applied to them. All of the AWD stuff basically freewheels without the shaft tying the pieces together.

Finally went and cranked the car up tonight. Move it just a few feet because the noise it made was real bad. It also felt like the shaft or something up front was moving around and maybe tapping on the bottom of the car. Listen and tell me what you guys think. The replacement shaft should arrive tomorrow. (I'm also having new tires installed tomorrow morning).

At that speed I would suggest that it sounds like the center bearing carrier in the prop-shaft has probably failed. It is possible the front prop bearing at the angle gear is bad or the rear bearing of the angle gear. If it was the VC or anything back of that I'd be surprised.

When you drive the car, is there a rhythmic jerking of the rear wheels going on at the same time you hear that popping noise?
If that's the case then the VC is locking up and the new drive shaft will not be the cure.

I sure hope that's not what's happening,
