It's hard to see #2 with it out of focus but the other 4 look fine, you could fix the head and be fine. Well along with everything else putting it back together ...

If you can do most of the labor yourself, I'd look into several options: a) recon the head with new valves, guides, seals and seat lap; b) get a used functional head; c) get a used engine if pistons are hit (not apparent in your pics). If repairs get to be extensive even with your labor cost of new parts may be more than used motor. If you're planning to have a shop do this it gets complicated.

I'm not seeing anything that sets my hair on fire from the pictures. If there are some burrs around the relief dimples smooth the edges with a piece of emery cloth and all should be fine.

Thanks all for the input. I'm doing all the labor myself sans the recon'ing the head. I've already spoken with Birmingham Cylinder Head Exchange (been around a long time and "very familiar with these engines"). I plan to drop the head off at there for an estimate this week. Preferably, I would like them to hand the head back to me ready to bolt on...cam cover and everything. Might be too expensive vs a used working engine. I hate go that route because mine only has 145k on the OD. At any rate, I hope to work something out.

(and more questions....)

The meat:

How are the cam followers to be installed? (I know oil and drop them in.) Where do the spring-y ones go? Where do the non-spring-y ones go?

I've got red (high temp) RTV to use to put the top cam cover on. Is this a no-no?

The potatoes:

The head is back from the machine shop and bolted down...progress is slow, but good. I've had to wait a week for the camshaft alignment/locking tool to be delivered. I thought I had a work-around so I wouldn't have to purchase the tool for one time use...then I thought better. Too much work to screw this up now.

At any rate...the machine shop handed me a zip-lock with my cam followers. Chilton states to "note their position" when removing them, however, I didn't remove them. I re-installed the cam followers (albeit one, which I hope is still in the machine shop) and noticed some have spring and others do not.

The number that have spring is equal to the ones that don't (using the ol' finger gauge). So, my question...what is the proper position of the cam followers?

The lifters are to be kept immersed in oil while they are out of the head, so they don't have to be pumped back full when you install. You put them back into the position in the head they came out of, you're supposed to keep track of that. OK I see this is potatoes not meat ... since they didn't keep track it will probably be OK, but I am not certain. The springiness I am guessing has to do with which ones still have some oil inside? Or could be an intake-exhaust thing hmmmm ... better wait for someone with more engine experience to chime in.

RTV is a NO-NO on the cam cover! Use the proper anaerobic gasket sealer, the Volvo stuff is the best but people have had very good success with the Permatex product.
