Are you saying that a piece of the exhaust system needs to be removed?
Why not drop the involved section totally, then and reinstall it after the work with the gas tank is done?
That's per Volvo. Perhaps they know their downpipe/catback flanges and bolts are obliterated in no matter of time, because of rust.

People get creative here: many owners decide to cut a section of floor to have an access through the cabin, like older Volvos had it.
