+1 to Lee, it is a great diagnostic tool, just wanted to remind all that like many tests it is only useful when the result is positive.

@alschnertz,

I HAD the exact same issue last year: 1/2 cup coolant/1,000 miles.
Turned out that after I replaced the heater core (see the DIY below, I also rebuilt the heater hoses etc.), the coolant consumption stopped.

I saw small traces of coolant residue on the old heater core.
So, if you haven't done the heater core yet, time to do so.

Well, I gave it some thought and figured why not stop at an AutoZone and rent the tool and just do the test in the parking lot. It'll save me an extra trip and a few bucks. So I took a side trip on the way home from work yesterday.

Got to say, that will likely be my last trip to an AutoZone or any other chain auto parts store.
Maybe these chain stores are better where you guys live, but every time I've gone to one around here I haven't been impressed. To be fair, these stores are usually staffed with young less experienced people and that's fine - you've got to learn somehow. But these same novices tend to come across as know-it-all nitwits.

I didn't really expect the rental counter person to know what a combustion gas leak detector was, but figured we could work our way through it. Didn't even get that far. The guy just kind of looked at me and simply said "Come back here. You can just look through all our rental tools and see if you can find what you're looking for." I'm pretty sure they keep a book that shows the available tools. Bottom line, I didn't find it but I did find a bottle of the liquid so they probably have the tool somewhere.

Anyway, I'll be avoiding the chain auto parts stores for a while if not for good. I can get fluids from Kmart or WalMart and most parts from online sources can be in the mailbox within a day or two. As for tools, I guess I'll go with the Lisle detector online.

Problem is you won't find any auto parts at department stores anymore...between Pep a Boy, Advance, AZ they have the market.

NAPA always seemed to have gals/guys who knew their stuff, but in my ALB life we have BAPGeON who are great.
