Biggest benefit is keeping all your oil and coolant leaks off the driveway. Also serves as a reservoir so you can separate them and reuse the fluid once it's all leaked out.

Can you still get these?

Neil.

Mechanics threw them away. I got a used one from a guy who was breaking cars; a scrap yard might be able to help

I also keep our full size spare tire in the skid plate because, you know, it doesn't fit in the trunk...

The plastic one is a great idea for keeping road salt off of the expensive stuff.
The state DOT just started using brine solution around interior Alaska in the last
few years and I wish I had one! I've always enjoys nice, clean metal under my car,
but signs of nasty crap are beginning to appear around the edges...

They should spend that money teaching people how to drive on ice and
maybe publish some decent info about choosing appropriate winter tires.

In the meantime, and getting on from that rant, here's my skid plate of choice:

Here's the skid plate I actually run. 3/16" steel. I think it was made by OMP at one time many moons ago. It has saved my oil pan a few times. Now its painted all purty and under the S70

Now that's a real 'Skid' Plate - with lots of skidding evidence on it. I was joking earlier about using the car as a grader and now I have to take the joke back. It looks like that 3/16" is about to wear out soon
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

I actually took one off of my son's 850...saved his pan too a few times. My son's 850 died last month...so this is for sale locally. It costs too much to ship it somewhere- about $50 is the cheapest anywhere, but if you need one and you're near me, you can send a PM...sorry, I know this should be in the for sale thread and not here but I'm not really actively trying to sell it. It's on the local Craigslist and it will eventually go to someone I'm sure.
