1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Oscillation damper it is. Would never have guessed that one. Thanks for letting me know. It's one of those parts that I only noticed because it's covered in oil and gunk as a result of seepage from the that turbo return line leak. Like to know what I'm cleaning off.

the part number is 9480153 and it is listed as an "oscillation damper" (there is a 2nd one mounted on the side of the Angle gear case). It is shown in this diagram as #18 in the first slide.

If I were you, I wouldn't remove the flat case/cover on it. Could be a nightmare getting back together upside down. That entire damper can be unbolted from the bevel gear without removing the bevel gear from the trans itself. If I recall correctly from when i did trans seals a couple months back, the damper is held on by 3 14mm bolts on the bottom.
