My rubber cushions aren't adjustable... not that it would have helped in my situation.

Three dousings with PB Blaster (letting sit overnight each time) and a follow-up with moly grease (as well as removing the slack out of the hood release in the cabin) seems to have fixed this problem.

It is lousy when the cables break but by no means do they all fail. I have never had a cable break. Knock on wood. One alternative is to rig a backup cable on each latch, I used old bicycle cabling to do that.

Someone suggested that a shot from a spray can of white lithium grease every six months was beneficial for keeping the latch mechanisms operating correctly, and it seems to be working so far.

Here is an emergency release I installed on both our cars because I just never wanted to deal with a broken cable.
