Sorry that I missed all of these posts on this thread.
I'll bet anything that you have a vacuum or turbo hose leak because as Matthew says, your smaller turbo will give you more umph on the low end than mine will, while my turbo has more on the high end if it were stock (currently running an IPD upgraded ECU).
If you're not feeling anything at all out of the usual when you floor it, I would definitely check for leaks in your vacuum hoses as well as your turbo hoses. A bad one to get a hole in or even slip off is the turbo "elbow" hose under the drivers' side of the radiator. You may have to take the plastic protector off of the bottom to see it. It takes a 10mm bolt on each side to be removed. This is the hose that comes up from the intercooler and over the top of the engine in an S-shape and down over the top of the turbo.

I have an S70 GLT.
I have a Tach
I have S E W modes
I cannot feel the turbo kick in. This is normal! The pressures are so light (5-7 psi) I don't think you are supposed to feel anything.
I have a turbo diesel Jetta with up to 18 psi and I can barely feel it "kick in" (ofcourse there is more power in the upper rpm's but this is normal) I can definatly hear it spin up though

I have a 99 s70 GLT. Tach, no SEW, just W. I can notice the turbo by looking at the gauges. The motor will be at around 3000 rpms, the speed increases fairly quick and the rpms stay about the same.

If you want the "seat of the pants" feel out of your turbo, spend a little and have your ECU upgraded...you'll match the stock T5 easily...something not to sneeze about.outlaw6bob wrote:The motor will be at around 3000 rpms, the speed increases fairly quick and the rpms stay about the same.

Install a boost gauge and find out what is going on. I did and noticed that I only boost about 4.5 psi. I have new IC hoses on the way and a new vacuum lines.

My 98 V70 AWD 144000 mi has three transmission modes and light pressure turbo. I can sense added torque above 3000 rpm (and the torque at 3K is pretty good) but it is not obvious when the turbo kicks in (assuming it does). I was wondering if anyone had added a boost gauge, and if so, how. Does the OBD have a boost output? Also, is there a diagnostic to determine if the turbo is working or not?

The OBD port does have boost information if you have special software that connects to a laptop but it's much easier and cheaper with a boost gauge.
I added a boost gauge to my car very easily.
The Lotek pod for the gauge can be bought here: http://gaugepods.com/volvo.html (like $20 if colored)
and the boost/vacuum gauge I got is from Summit Racing: http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch ... wordSearch
for about $50. So for about $70 plus shipping you get all you need to put a gauge on your A-pillar.
Diagnostics of your turbo is easy with the gauge...during idle you should be at 16 or 17 or below (letting off of your gas down a hill it will go down to 20~21) while boost should show about 7~8 for the low pressure turbo and 11~12 for the high pressure turbo (without modding). If these numbers are off by much you'll know you have a vacuum leak or your turbo isn't working properly.
If anyone buys a set-up like this and needs help installing the gauge post back and I can give you some pointers on how it's done. I believe total time for installation was less than 30 minutes in my case (on my S70).

MIJ,
Thanks. Think I'll get one as it would be useful for vac diagnosis as well as boost. There is not a single pod listed for V70 but the C70 one should fit, true?
I had been thinking of a Scangauge II, but it doesn't appear to have a boost read.

Yes, it should work...is there not an S70 pod on there? It would definitely be the same for your model.
