Turbo in S70 GLT
Turbo in S70 GLT
I had a quick question about the turbo in my car. Before i had my turbo S70, I had a non turbo 850, and I can tell that my S70 is much faster, but i really cant tell when my turbo is "kicking in". Should I really be able to feel it, and at what rpm does it normally kick in. thanks.

Yours is a low pressure turbo (lpt) and so when it does kick in it will be much more subtle than one like in my T5. Turbo kicks in at around 3000rpms, so just hit the gas and watch your rpm's. See if you can feel anything at 3K or so. If you're not feeling anything then you might have a boost leak somewhere worth investigating.

Today, multiple times, i floored it from 0 and around 3000 to 3500 rpms, i could feel it pull a little faster, but it wassnt enough where if i was not looking at my rpm's i would have easily noticed it. It was not like a jolt forward. Does that sound correct?

My '98 S70 has the S E W buttons. Does yours? If so, take it out of E (economy) and push in the S (sport) and see if you feel something more. You should feel something enough to know it's not just normal engine acceleration. In the "E" mode, you don't feel much except in the top end..75-80mph or so on the highway.

Right under my gear selector, I have a W button, to switch between normal and winter mode, but i can't find the S E W buttons. For some reason I thought I had seen these buttons in my car, but I cant find them. I know this sounds stupid, but where are they located on your S70?

I think I know what it is. Wolf, your and Mom's 70s are turbo, but low pressure and smaller, and I think they produce 197hp. As such, they don't have a tach or the transmission sport/economy modes.
For what it's worth, the smaller turbos spin up and deliver power quicker than the larger ones (better around-town performance/torque).
The larger turbo T-5s have the tach and modes. My 850 T-5 (222 hp) certainly does.
