I think it is important to point out when people do hack jobs on parts that affect either safety or emissions. Also to save you from repeating the work twice, the tape repair won't last or pass a mechanic's inspection if you sell / certify the car.

As long as these cars last, The car has a lot of miles, unless you got it for a really good deal you may want to use it for parts. You can get much lower mileage with a good HG for around $1000. With that mileage you can be forever chasing repairs.

Welcome to the board but slow down and take some advice. Then you will truly enjoy the ride!

;) the tape is the self-sealing silicone for fixing plumbing, etc. I bought a roll of the black to replace it, but I think this was only a dollar at the dollar store - it's only about 10ft, I think it was E-Z fusehttp://www.supergluecorp.com/?q=super-g ... e-red-10ft:
The bond is permanent, waterproof, airtight, non-conductive, insulating, and resists weathering, salt water, and UV Rays! It seals wet or dry leaks, insulates 8,000 volts (per unstretched layer and functions at -60° F to +500°F
Yes, 'roadside', because I wanted to try to clear the EVAP P0455 code and get all Ready indicators and pass inspection/get registered, without waiting on the J-hose to come from FCP/IPD, etc. (just can't bear to pay double locally - not that much of an emergency :)).

Can you get 1999 car certified? The inspection in NC (as I reacall) is just lights/wipers/horn and no DTC.

The light fix isn't 'cosmetic' - those yellow/brown reflectors only let people know you're on the road, they didn't illuminate more than 1 ft in front of the car.

I'll post the paint I used, it was something I had from when I painted a brass light fixture when I sold our last house, a primer/topcoat in one, seals on plastic type, not a household name, iirc.

If NC follows EPA rules (most states do) you can have up to 2 monitors "NOT READY" and still pass your emission inspection.

Since the P0455 takes a drive cycle to show up, you can clear codes, drive for 50-100 miles and pass inspection

Unless your car stinks of fuel vapour, you arent putting too much more vapor into the air than the rest of us - Volvo EVAP system is really sensitive.

The tape is a performance upgrade - now I have a silicone hose! ;)

Abscate - thanks - I'll look into that - I assumed they all had to be ready.

I guess I dried the coolant out of those two cylinders this morning only for the experience!

You were right! I got my plate even with EVAP not ready, and now I can concentrate on the HG... and the PCV... and getting the doors to open with the key... and replacing the headlights (though my painted reflectors did pass the safety inspection)... and fixing the broken plastic hood relase handle... and finding the EVAP leak (the inspector gave me a hint to flip the gas cap o-ring over :) )... and the timing belt/water pump... and all the rest of Stage 0!

Everybody knows red is ANSI marking for pipes containing combustible gas. This tells a fireman that a car on fire contains gas. Very clever. Looks like an excellent handlebar wrap job. Good luck.

Also, on the PCV front, I pulled the hose at valve cover, and the opening only measures 10mm (less than 3/8"), but I still think the 5/8" hose will help just by letting the molecules of oil vapor have more volume to avoid colliding with each other, thus moving the equilibrium toward more molecules in the vapor than in the liquid state... ;)

Thought I'd get some pics up since my wife just washed the S70.

Funny story about the '90 wagon: a retired couple within a mile or two of us had the exact same wagon, only better looking clearcoat ;) and a few weeks ago were T-boned and the car totalled. They want to buy our, he just loves that model - sentimental, I guess. It's also close to 300k miles.

Discovered a new item to add to the list on the S70, the trunk supports - that's the heaviest trunk lid I've ever expereinced - and my first car was a '70 Coupe de Ville. I'm wondering if it's supposed to have some electronic 'soft close' mechanism that's not working?
