I agree, unfortunately both Volvo's I've bought had terrible previous owners and I have a to do A LOT to get to stage 0 so there narrows the upgrade budget quite a bit.
I'm coming to the conclusion for underbody stuff anyway, just jump to upgrades. Something breaks just replace it with aftermarket and slowly work your way through. Eventually everything will be new and will last for quite some time. For engine wise that's something that has to be either you replace with OEM or you get all the parts that are related for aftermarket all at once.

Fwiw the rally approach might serve great purpose and functionality for the treacherous pothole infested neglected Michigan roads.
Dont do the obnoxious 4x4 tires or armada lifted look. Go slightly higher if you deem it necessary, but really the taller sidewalls and firmer suspension will likely be perfect.
My fridge on wheels falls on the other spectrum. Have not had much issues other than a few balljoints and tierods getting sloppy. I'd contribute it quality of parts.
