I think there could be a big difference between what I believe it's worth and what someone would be willing to pay. That's all I was saying. Thanks for your input.
Yup, but what I was getting at was that "worth" is a concept without meaning until it's validated with cash. These cars aren't worth much because people won't pay much for them.

Should they be worth more? Maybe. Their value as transportation is certainly higher than their value as an investment. Ideally those would be balanced, and putting money and effort into maintaining your car would be rewarded with significantly higher resale value. But for now, and probably forever, used Volvos are not a seller's market.

The exception is on a Volvo site. I "overpaid" for my wagon by a lot because I wanted a manual P80 wagon and it was worth many dollars to me to have an example with enthusiast owners and some documented history. You will likely find people of similar mind on this and other Volvo sites, but Craigslist etc is likely a dead end if you're not selling under 4k.

Absolutely. I follow P80 listings (what other low-cost Volvo-related hobbies are there?) around here in the tri-state area and I never see anything sell for $2500+ around here. I would say that the bulk of them are priced toward the higher end of $500-$1500. With a few exceptional-condition models going up to $2500. But none of these Volvos sell fast here.

That being said, I have only seen ONE 99-00 manual transmission P80 for sale around here in the past two years. And that was a 99 with a broken timing belt. I believe the owner wanted $800 for it.

I think 1., there's a bad rap on what parts cost and 2., folks are generally scared of plunking down money on a 20-yr old car.

On a related note, I haven't seen a single 850 sell for under $1500 around here. I think the 850s are officially in the classic and collectible category around here.

Again, this is only the NYC, tri-state area...

I think:

1) Its a limited market. The person interested in this car will know what they are looking for. Twenty year old cars of any make would scare 95% of most of the general population off. The only way to sell these cars for decent money are to fellow enthusiasts, specialty sites, or evilBay.

2) It's all about what records and what recent maintenance was done. Knowing what I now have in "Anna" between purchase price last year, fixing the dozens of small stupid things, and getting to stage zero on the timing belt / water pump, fluids, suspension components and brakes ... I'd gladly pay $4K for yours if I were in the market and everything was documented and up to snuff.

OK, I admit, I don't get jealous too often, but that shifter knob????? Are you kidding me? That's what they could look like?? I better switch pages because my wife might start complaining. I expect you'll get a mid $3K offer by the end of next week. Good luck with her. The car's an absolute dream.
