NO DAMAGE had is checked today and the mechanic pointed to the wheel arch and said 'it was a big hit' you can see that the tyre hit the wheel lining. The clunking noise however was the sway bar moved all the way to one side causing it to knock against something i think it was a link rod. He showed me how it easily moves left and right about 2 inches or more..

Open up the spring assembly and check your bump stops. They can erode and become very squishy resulting in what you have there. Good bump stops won't allow contact between tyre and body.
I just replaced mine in my 2001 T5. They were about 1/3 shorter than when new and looked a real mess.
I used the Monroe kit which isn't an exact fit however some shaving down with a grinder made them fit the seating washers.
