This is a great idea! Maybe Matthew 1 can set a poll on this thread including brands, weight, and synthetic / conventional. I imagine the most popular weights and brands with a other category to cover the uncommon weights and brands. After all with this thread in the newsletter it's bound to get plenty of attention. June

Other interesting data to cross-reference would be driving conditions (regular or severe), high-low average ambient temperature, geographic location.June wrote: ↑31 Aug 2017, 09:59This is a great idea! Done. I only added brands. Otherwise polls can get unwieldy.

Thank you, I am really interested in the topic of brands and corresponding miles the engines last to better help me keep my Volvo healthy. June

-04 V70 2.5T 320000km/200000 miles. Oil consumption is low, a few deciliters per 10000km. Last time this included some heavy 100mph+ driving on the German autobahn during the summer.
Usually the cheapest synthetic 5w40 ACEA A3 spec i can find which is around 3-4€ a litre. The climate here is quite moderate and I do most of my miles on longer trips that are 60 miles or more so there are few "cold stops" where the car hasn't gotten properly warm during driving.
For the european spec cars the oil change interval is 20000km/12500miles and previous owners seem to have stuck to that. I've kept to half that so far since the oil is so cheap and its an easy way to avoid expensive repairs. It works out to oil an change every spring and autumn with my driving habits.

I used to vary between Any synthetic 5W-30 during cold months and conventional 5W-30 for the warmer months.
Lately, and maybe forever, I'll be using Mobil1 0W-40 European Formula exclusively.
I go by the owners' manual 7,500 mile recommendation.
Mann, Hengst, WIX and Hastings filters ONLY in any vehicle I touch.
No science, just fear.

What about Mahle filters? They're Volvo OE as I understood it.Georgeandkira wrote: ↑01 Sep 2017, 06:20 I used to vary between Any synthetic 5W-30 during cold months and conventional 5W-30 for the warmer months.

I also go by the owner's manual, that is 12,500 miles between oil changes. Until I took over at about 55k miles, my 02 V70 (B5244S2) got what the dealers use here, Castrol Edge Professional A3/B4 0w30. I did that once more and have been using 0w40 full syn since, mostly Castrol Edge and lately, Mobil 1.
I need to refill about 3 quarts between oil changes, but it hasn't gotten worse over the last 50k miles.
