#1 never take your Volvo there again. Ever. Ever ever ever. :-)

#2 grab some basic hand tools, a socket extender and a swivel joint. You can do this all yourself. It is a bit of a pain in the bootay, but it is easy. I'd say 2/5 on the difficulty scale. It'll take you about 8 hours the first time. Watch robertdiy's videos, read the aforementioned guide. Call ipd for the parts their kit is cheaper than FCP. I just did this myself in Jan. It sucks, but no one else is going to do it correctly, except for maybe a Volvo focused shop.

#3 there is no ptc on the non turbos.

You can do it!

PCV isn't hard but it takes a long time to take everything off, then put everything back on. Don't forget you also need an intake manifold gasket to do the PCV job. I would replace all rubber vacuum hoses while you are in there (viewtopic.php?t=65002). It is a pesky job but the 20 year old rubber hoses under the hood are mostly falling apart by now.
Thanks a lot. I've find a few posts following your suggestion and I'm reading through them.

The intake manifold gasket is different for EGR or non-EGR. My naive question is how do I know whether my car has EGR or not. Is there a specific thing I should look for under hood?

Try writing down your VIN and using a VIN decoder, the one at the Volvo club website breaks down the different emissions codes. The EGR is a valve and large metal tube that connect to your intake manifold. Check the videos and you will learn it (my cars are non-EGR, so I'm kinda clueless.
the above advice is all good, you CAN do this, it just takes time. Also, get a new oil cap seal.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Take note it is easy to confuse EGR valve with the SAS valve, even though they are located in different places. There are three pics on this page: http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_how ... n_egr.html. Pic #3 shows part of the EGR right under the word "Diaphragm" you can see that from the front of the car if you look down under the throttle body. And in pic #2 the back end of the EGR assembly is pointed to in yellow arrows. Actually that pic also shows the fame trap (throw away the flame trap disc!).

Here's a clean EGR diapragm: http://media.skandix.de/pimg/1026122.jpg
And here's a dirty one: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=127481

Checked my VIN and it shows mine has an EGR. Will doublecheck following the pictures. Thanks again.

Hi, This may sound naive. But anyone can give me some hint about the hose clamp size? I see in cn90's post, three different clamps are used. Don't know which sizes I should buy.
