Upgraded to VIDA DiCE 2014D. The DiCE device with multi-colored LEDs works best when connected to OBD-II port. The USB connection to laptop is for communicating with VIDA software only -- it is NOT to a 12v power supply.

DiCE is powered by car battery when connected to OBD-II. It takes stable voltage above 12.8vdc for best diagnostic experience. Car battery can not provide such voltage without it being hooked up to an external charger. My old analog Schumacher drops voltage significantly at POS-II -- can't keep voltage up above 11.3 v. Common problem, ERASE ALL and READ functions failures without me knowing.

Unless someone tells us otherwise, Volvo recommends a 55 AMP unit. Found this IOTA DLS-55/IQ4 12 VOLT 55 AMP 4 STAGE AUTOMATIC SMART BATTERY CHARGER / POWER SUPPLY.

FWIW, I just put VIDA 2014D on my old ragged-out hp laptop (500 GB HDD with Win 7 64-bit Pro) which is garage-dedicated.

To install, I downloaded Roxanna Shram's builds from Sweedspeed.

I found a 12V DC 1 Amp adapter in my garage and I used that to connect an old working DiCE at the first VIDA run - it ran just fine; on the DiCE self-test it reported 13.8 V supply.

Then I connected VIDA/DiCE to my wife's 2015 XC60T5 and it read the car fine.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful comments and instructions!

regarding the 12 volt DC 1 amp adapter, can you tell me the polarity of the tip? Is it (-) on the outside and (+) on the center?

I have a 2 amp 12 volt adapter that fits perfectly but I want to make sure the polarity before making it live.

Update: I disassembled the Dice and checked the 12v power socket. It matches what my adapter has: negative outside and positive center.

Here is the scoop...probably 99% of things with module power supplies are wired for this

Yes indeed. An ounce of precaution ... it didn't become a proverb without reason.
