My 93 filter has "quick release" connections. The 17mm open-end wrench was just for pushing the connections away and off from the filter. There was no 17mm nut. I used an almost equivalent SAE wrench because I couldn't find my metric. I jacked car up on the side below the right front door and used a large block of wood in case my jack failed. Used a towel to catch gas drippings. Wear goggles. The rubber caps that come with the new filter to keep it clean are useful to put on the old filter to prevent some of the dripping (I forgot this precaution). A gas mask would have been useful, I'm still coughing from the stink.

In the process of doing this repair. I finally was able to get the lines off of the old filter and put the new one on. now when I try to start the car I have fuel squirting out. I used a screw driver to get the first line off and the box end wrench (as suggested) to get the rear ward line off. Is it possible I damaged the lines?

I'm frustrated. This has taken a lot longer than expected. After the spilled gas dissapates I'll move my car and try again. Any insight? Filter ends not long enough? I purchased the BOSCH OEM filter from FCP Groton.

I'm just wondering if installing it backwards would cause an issue?

No, I had it installed correctly - good guess though. I must have turned the bracket holding the filter in place when I was tightening the bolt. Thank you for the suggestion.

I finally got the new filter installed. The lines weren't seated properly. So I basically reinstalled the filter, got some gas on me, and I was able to get my car to work. Boy, that was scary when I would try and start the car and just hear "some liquid" hitting the ground. Hopefully it won't leak in the future. I'll keep an eye on it.

i just changed mine and it was the original. Gas lines came off ok after letting it sit for 15 minutes to de-pressurize, and took off the gas cap for a minute as well. But when taking off the retaining band bolt, it sheared after a rotation so had to take it down into the workshop and the inside nut was rusted onto the band so tight it finally took a sledgehammer and masonary chisel to knock it off. Went to the hardware store and got a new stainless steel bolt and locking nut and had to put the retaining band on, bolt not tightened, then finese the new fuel filter into it then tighten the bolt. i finally had to coat the new fuel filter with oil for it to slide in because it was a very snug fit even with the bolt loose.

My bolt holding on the fuel filter was rusted on solid...no way it would come off, so I'm off to the mechanic since I can't replace it myself if I can't get the bolt off unfortunately!!
