Mystery engine issue
Update: New MAF installed. Added plugs and fuel filter to tomorrow's timing belt appointment. Water pump service TBD depending on what they see.........$ outlay still palatable, but if water pump needs attention, it starts to get alarming. And NOW......took the car to town and had problems that indicate ETM issues after all: irregular performance, check engine light and, most telling, definite "hunting" at idle. I have an invoice from the previous (2nd) owner that shows re-replacement of the ETM 10/14, no mileage indicated, but shortly before I bought the car at 162K. 1st ETM replacement was for the original owner in '05 at 66.5K. So: 66.5 K on original ETM, 95.5K on 1st replacement, now 52K on second replacement. Shop says they will remove and clean it before considering replacement. From what I understand, ETM warranty is 10 yr/200K, so I'm hoping that replacement, if necessary, will be covered. I'll be searching on line for whether the warranty extends to any/all replacements. Sheesh - might be time to give up?

That warranty was an extension on the original ETM via the recall, not on all ETM replacements.
That’s very short life on those ETMs, though, they are typically 150k items

Yeah, that's what I determined in my search. Hoping a cleaning will get me running again, and as we speak, looking at XeMODex.

Well now - shop (dealer) says code indicates electronic issue, thus need for a new ETM, so all other work was postponed until that is solved. Quoted genuine Volvo replacement at $506, labor at ~$300 with LIFETIME guarantee, INCLUDING labor. This apparently as of 2017 - new Volvo warranty policy apparently covers all dealer bought and installed replacement parts - on all model years - save normal wear items like plugs, pads, rotors, belts, etc. XeMODex runs $50 more, has contact-less TPS, but their lifetime warranty doesn't include labor. Shop mgr. couldn't speak to the Volvo unit having a contact-less TPS, but.......this seems like a no-brainer to me on a car of this age and mileage........genuine Volvo: TPS upgrade or not. Guaranteed. For life. Unless, of course, there are real world pitfalls to the new Volvo warranty that aren't readily apparent - can anyone speak to this? I'll be searching in the meantime.......to be continued.
