Agree on the plastic clip, check out a youtube video on how to turn and remove it.
I have an 06 XC70 with the same problem. I removed the pillars. Cleaned. Went to JoAnn's fabric store for black headliner material, also purchased 3m adhesive spray there. $15 for plenty of fabric, $10 for the adhesive. Applied leaving plenty of extra which I trimmed. Then treated with "water and sun shield with UV protector" Scotchguard. Looks OEM, and I like the black vs original color, no fading or problems yet.
