Some people say the serp belt is easy, I find it pretty tricky when it keeps jumping off one of the lower pulleys

What the videos usually don't show is how to slip the belt on without removing the crank pulley, how to adjust the later type of tensioner (mid 2004-up) and also how to release the cam hubs tension.

I think it’s possible to do the 1999 timing belt without removing the crank pulley but I wouldn’t. The contortion is likely to damage the timing belt . The 1998 and earlier are easier.

I have the nice AKN tool for SERP belt but never realized the trick of using that tool with a 14 mm box/open for the P2 SERP belt, so today I am wiser man. Thanks Jason and FCP.

Serp belt is difficult with 1 person.
A trick is using bungee cord with hooks to apply tension on the belt while you try to route it through the pulleys.

I just did this while replacing my water pump. I did it without a second set of hands but it would have been much easier with another person. Best purchase I made beforehand was the serpentine belt tool from ipd. Also, second what abscate says, don't try to bend and twist the timing belt to get it past the crank pulley, you can damage the belt fibers and it's just not worth the risk to your engine versus the time you might save. You might also consider a crank-locking tool which will make it much easier to remove and reinstall that pulley.

Other handy items to do while you're in there: idlers/tensioners should be changed with the belt, it's easy to remove the PS pump and change the thermostat/housing while you've got the serp belt off, and of course the water pump (which I've heard is probably good for well over 100, like 150k or maybe up to 200, but they're not very expensive either).

Good for at least 250k.

Interesting that on early p80s it gets changed at 2nd timing belt at 140k, but in the 1999-2000 it goes to 210k, for the same part
