I know of very few engines that have the crankcase size to remove piston from the bottom. The ones that allowed it were old engines with 6 cylinders and 4 main bearings or 4 cylinder with 3 mains. Old tractor engines and some welders, etc. even those required the crankshaft be removed first. Look at the cylinder spacing in the photos showing the block and then look at bottom end photos. The main bearings are a lot wider than the cylinder to cylinder spacing so the bearing support part of block is far too wide for a piston to come out the bottom. On V6 and V8 where there are fewer mains, the main bearing supports are just below the cylinders so not enough room to bring piston out of bore and then move it over to bring out bottom.

I think it has to come out the top

Crank removal would be an engine out job.

Antler-man...I’ve got a 1998 motor out I can pull a piston and rod. You might have to spec and source rings to match but that would save a big tear down.

Biggest issue is most engine need the piston rings to be dropped in from the top with a piston ring compressor. Putting in from the bottom is likely to break the edges of the rings.
