96' 850 evaporator job, can't remove heater box, please help.

Steve thank you, I figured it out the minute you sent this. You are quite right, lifting up and out did the trick. Stumbled over my own stupidity yet again.

I just did this in my 850 last weekend. Try lifting it straight up a bit. I had everything disconnected as well but it felt like something was still holding it. I eventually tried going straight up and something released for me. Hope that's your issue!

That was exactly it. I just didn't realize that you have to lift up a little before you can pull out.
It's all back together and installed in the car with new evaporator and heater core. I just have to put the dashboard and everything else back in next weekend.

I looked at my spare this evening and it has a barb on the pin end, facing down.

That is a rude addition for us DIY PEOPLE.

I noticed it on mine, but is was a very mild barb that didn't actually do anything to hold the box back.

It looks to me as though the Volvo engineers who dreamed up the P80's never thought that the evaporator might need replacing.
But unfortunately their "evaporator for life" idea didn't quite pan out.
Although it did turn out to be a money making machine for the dealers
