Re: V70 XC, operates normal in reverse, barely moves forward at all

I do think it must be stuck in winter so from my perspecive its solved when that is corrected

Before the accident:
1- vertical dashboard arrow lit up while shifter was in postition 3, 2, or 1, telling you you are not in D, now it does not
2- now that W button does not lite up or seem to affect the operation of the vehicle
3- studying the schematic, there is a component 3/63 called Automatic gearbox program selector, maybe involved in this, its under the dashboard L side, talks directly to the TCM, did not find a part on Volvo parts site for this component

Any ideas about getting it unstuck
inspect wire around the W button or the 3/63??

I have a TCM from a parts car, .... does it make sense to swap it in if its the same part number .... or .... are they programmed with different software updates ....

Is the parts car fitted with the same transmission? i can't recall if your car is fitted with a 5 speed auto (I think it is in 2000), but other than the 'R' and base models I don't think any others were.

If you fit the wrong TCU the car won't like it as it is also programmed through the instrument panel.

I am not certain TCM is VIN pinned, the ECM certainly is from 1999- on

Just a start stop cycle with key off should clear winter mode. It’s electrically selected , and I’m pretty sure it defaults off on start up. Check the manual on that though. Does the button toggle up/ down or is it just a pushbutton? I forget.

That “ hard run” advice sounds like advice to ignore.

.., and from the manual

Driving mode selector

The buttons at the base of the gear lever allow you to select the Winter/Wet driving mode.

W Winter/Wet mode
Enhanced Vehicle Traction
This mode may be selected for starting/moving off on slippery roads.

In position D*, the gearbox starts in 3rd gear and changes up to 4th gear.
In position 3*, 2nd gear is locked and there is no change up to 3rd gear.
In position L, 1st gear is locked.

The indicator lamp in the instrument panel lights up when this mode is selected (the lamp will also light up if the gear selector is in position 3 or L). Press W to disengage this mode.
When this mode is disengaged or if the ignition is switched off**, the gearbox automatically reverts to the normal driving mode. If the indicator lamp begins to flash, this is an indication of a fault in the automatic gearbox. The Malfunction Indicator lamp will also light up if a fault is detected. If the transmission does not shift properly, place the gear selector in position L. Please contact your Volvo retailer if this occurs.

The vertical dashboard arrow , prior to the accident, would lite up in positions 3, 2, and one, Not any more. It does lite up during start sequence, showing the bulb / circuit is working.

The W is push button it no longer lites up after the accident and does not seem to affect W mode. It seems to move from stationary in a higher gear then is normal above 7 or so MPH.

I'll need to make more observations carefully to see if I can determine what shifting is taking place, not real clear to me.

It seems so far: all lever positions allow trans to operate "normally" above 8 to 10 mph.

What was the code which your "volvo guy" cleared?
Don't drive it like this... you will fry plates in the transmission.
