There is a check valve built into the fuel pump, that may be failing.
Test: using a fuel pressure gauge, check the pressure right after turning the car off and then at several intervals until the next morning. If pressure drops over time, then it is likely the check valve.
Solutions:
(1) replace the fuel pump
or
(2) install an in-line check valve. Many of these have been installed on early P2 cars but I've never done it, can't advise you more than that except to say install it close to the filter.
