I think that diaphragm sitting on top of the oil trap is similar to BMW CCV Valve.
Basically one-way valve that allows vapor to enter intake manifold while oil is going
back to the crankcase.
The oil trap by itself is a box, so to speak...

When the diaphragm ruptured on my car it subjected the crankcase to a very strong vacuum. So strong it caused a loud whistling noise as air was being sucked into the engine through the various oil seals, etc. One person described it as a kazoo.
