That’s a fair whine. I had to drop my axle three times, the third time my Indy did it.

Would this be considered a... mechanical whine?

Any diff failure on a Volvo is so rare , nobody tests these things for stuff like that. If you have had the clamshell down already, second time is a breeze.

I believe pathetic would be a more appropriate term. Maybe I will just manual swap it at the same time, probably not but maybe

Well I think we found the reason for the car being initially parked. Figured there had to be a reason, it's a doozy. It never even crossed my radar to check it prior to putting it back together and since the pump was bad I couldn't drive it prior to dropping the rear the first time. I am making a table to support it this time and just raising the car off of it on the lift and doing the work on the table rather than grunting it all over the place

The situation is depressing, not to make fun of you, just looking for humor in it. The front gets most of the power, I can't remember the split but it's at least 60/40 favoring the front in normal driving. It's bad luck. FWIW it looks incredible with the wheels. You're putting in some Work. Hang in there.

I forgot this in my first post so here it is now:

I walked away from this for awhile as I had other pressing matters but finally got a few hours to mess with it today. I dropped the rear sub frame AGAIN and replaced the rear diff with the one from my parts 2000 that I stripped. The diff is nasty as it was a northern car but it did not make any noise and fluid looked good.Got it back up in the car. installed the VC and nothing makes noise now when turned. I still have the exhaust, wiring to reconnect, driveshaft to install, rear brakes and the interior to put back together so hopefully will have this rework done tomorrow and with any luck this portion will be behind me. After that it is the ignition switch and an alignment and on to the rest of the body.

I would like to flip a big old middle finger to the engineers who designed this rear diff setup. They really made what is typically a fairly quick and straight forward job incredibly labor intense.
