I can check the cam timing but it will take me a few days, to get it in the shop to take it apart and borrow the tools from the Volvo dealer. I will let you know what I find out.
Thanks again....
Timing belt tension '98 XC70 B5245T Engine
Hi;
Okay here is the scoop. I rechecked the cam timing, they were just a hair off. (Retarded). I reset them to the correct position and locked them down. I replaced the tensioner, with one that is stamped with Volvo. Set it using the instructions from Volvo, turned the engine over by hand a few times and the tensioner stayed right in the middle. I started the engine and let it run till it got hot. Gave it few good revs and let it idle.
The tensioner moved more to the right of the window the hotter the engine got, I shut the engine off and it went all the way over to the right. I let the engine cool down for a while and the tensioner had moved back closer to the window, but there is still some slack on the belt between the intake cam and the crank.
Conclusion....This seems to be a normal condition. I have spoken with several Volvo Technicians and they say they have never seen this condition.
Anyway....Now you know.
I want to thank everyone for there help it is most appreciated.
Hugh Wilson.
