2006 S60 Thermostat Replacement - Is housing replacement req

For your 2006 2.5T it is required that you change the entire thermostat housing when replacing the thermostat. It is only offered as a whole unit from Volvo. You might be able to get it off and apart from the car, but once you do, there is no way to get the thermostat by itself. It is only offered WITH the whole housing. Part number is 30777476 for housing (includes t-stat) and 8636573 is for the gasket.

FYI - The only time you can change the t-stat by itself on S60/V70 cars is -2001 for the turbos and -2002 for the non-turbos. Otherwise it is required you change the whole t-stat housing.

I have. 2004 s60 heater not blowing warm. Told it needs new thermostat as water temp only 120'. I just had the whole housing and thermostat replace just over two yeas ago (little over 10,000 mi). Why would this need replacement so soon? Why does the entire housing have to be replaced again?

Secondly, when you say water temp 120F, is that measured with a code reader or at the vents? If it's a real coolant temperature measure, then it is very low. I would even say it's a temperature for a car that had its thermostat removed all together. Does the temp needle on the dash climb steadily and stay near the 12 o'clock mark? Does it move down as you drive the car at speed?

The temp guage reads normal/middle. Mechanic did the temp assessment, not sure how. He believes the guage is not reading correctly.
We've had a perpetual coolant leak requiring filling the overflow tank every week. Pressure test holds. No visible leaks, no smells, no fogging inside.

- Wahler is now about $95.

- No need to replace the lower part of the housing. Just swap the Tstat itself, ECT, upper housing and the new gasket over and you are done.

- If you take your time and read the thread below carefully, then it is a 30-min job max!

Do you see white marks around the top of the coolant reservoir? That would explain a leak at the small return hose or at the reservoir cap.

How many miles on the engine ? Was the water pump already replaced?

Over the years, I have noticed Volvo changed the PN for the thermostat for the different yrs of P2 S60 cars, which I don't quite understand why.

Anyway, I have swapped early type tstat and later tstat without issues.
In other words, I have used thermostat "designed for 2004 S60" in a 2007 S60 w/o issues.

Why do I say this? Sometimes ebay has sellers who try to get rid of their Volvo Genuine thermostat (brand-new old stock = NOS) for let's say $50 instead of the usual outrageous price of $110. I bought a brand-new Volvo thermostat for 2004 and installed it in a 2007 w/o issues.

For example:

- 2004 S60 2.5T 31293700, nipple = 33mm long vs 2007 S60 2.5T 31293698, nipple = 25 mm long.

- The only difference is the length of the nipple (for the coolant hose in the PCV system).
