Indeed they all have SIPS, the early ones were fired mechanically, the 99/00 cars had electrically fired SIPS bags so putting a 2000 seat in to a pre 99 car means there is no electrical connection to the SIPS bags so they won't work in the event of a collision - Mike

There is a difference between a SIPS car and a SIPS Airbag car. The SIPS system simply directs the energy of the impact away from the passenger (Side Impact Protection System). The SIPS Airbag system does this but also combines it with a side torso airbag.
If it just says SIPS then there is no side airbag. ALL airbag locations must be labeled either SRS or AIRBAG.
All 850's have SIPS. The side airbag was optional up until either 95 or 96 when it became standard.

Hi there.

I have a question related to this.
All seatheater wires are loose under my front chairs.
To easily access it, I wanted to remove both chairs.
So amongst others I came to this page.

Now I found the orange safeguard cap for the airbag system and put it on.
But it looks so simple and like it does nothing, I became afraid of doing something wrong.
I just cant see why and how does this would safeguard me from the thing exploding in my face..
I hoped to find more info on this, but all I can find are pictures where it is allready on and nobody sais what it actually does or how it works to make me feel more secure..
Not enough info to my liking for quite a dangerous system ;)

Can anyone tell me anything about the system? What does the orange plastic cap actually do?
thanks!

Personally I think the plastic safety cap you slide in place is overkill. On my first 850 I took the seats out many times w/o even knowing there was a safety device that should be inserted to prevent the airbag from deploying.

rspi's video also shows just how hard it is to get the airbag to accidentally deploy:

But to answer your question; when you insert the plastic cap correctly it prevents the trigger from accidentally being set off. It just physically covers the trigger up so if you bump it you'll hit the plastic cover not the trigger itself.

Like I said earlier, you have very little reason to worry, I've had these seats out many times only once did I actually use the safety cover.

The video makes a nice addon to the explanation. So basicly if you hit the thing you cover with the plastic cap, the airbag in the side will deploy.
And the cover just makes that physically impossible.
Thanks!

By the way, Marcin, that is the 850 your instrument cluster came out of.

I was going to link your video too but you set the airbag off on like your second try so that kind of went against the point I was trying to make. :D lol

I've installed some of the parts you got for me already but the cluster hasn't gone in yet. I can't wait to get it in though so I have working gauges again! M56 is just around the corner.
