Washer info

Post by tastyorange »

I found the washer info (dime and quarter) on this site. Thanks!
Now I need to find the right size wrench.

Hi,

I just did an oil change for my s70 t5. I didn't notice that there was a washer until I had already put the drain plug on. Will this be a problem?

The thing is, I did an oil change myself on this car once before, and I don't recall there being a washer with the drain plug then. This was two oil changes ago (the oil change in between was done by the dealer, so I assume they must have added the washer?)

Also, when I remove the dipstick with the engine running, I notice quite a bit of white smoke coming out. Is this bad?

Thanks

It could be. Since I have - at present, my daughter wants to get rid of her Porsche and buy an 850, 3 of these things I buy the crush washers by the dozen. If you have any leaks the washer has an OD the size of a quarter and an ID the size of a dime. Most auto parts stores should be able to come up with something close. They are aluminum, not copper.

Potentially yes, search the database for PCV for more details but left unserviced you can blow the rear main engine seal. The seal is cheap but the labor to remove the transmission and replace it isn't cheap -even if you do it yourself.

Very interesting research on factors related to Oil Changing:

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html

Some conclusions:

Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it.

Topping up the crankcase is a critical component of extended oil change intervals, and frequent filter changes are most likely the key to extreme-length intervals. The cumulative effect of even minor top-ups, let alone a filter change, substantially increases the longevity of the oil.

That's a good read! It confirms my conclusions from reading stuff over at BITOG and on TDIclub and reflects my new approach to oil changes on my Volvo.

I'll just note that I'm working on a new strategy of replacing my oil filter every 3000 miles (along with about 1/2 qt fresh oil) and adding topup oil at the rate of approximately 1/2 qt every 1000 miles and basically planning on never changing my oil again. That is going to be the case IF the topup rate continues at a steady 1/2 qt or more per 1000 miles, which has actually been slowing down lately. If the engine stops using oil I will go with about 9k mile oil changes with new filters at 3k and 6k along with a total of 1-2 qts topup oil. 9k miles will be about one year for me.

I have been running Mobil 1 with 20-25K oil changes on my 2004 Nissan I4 pickup for years, doing filter changes 5-7K and regular top ups, it has 120K on now, and oil consumption has never changed (uses about 1 qt per 5K); no smoke or anything and runs well, averaging 24 mpg.

Does anyone have similar (oil change) tips for a Volvo 440 from 1993? Thanks in advance.
