Re: Oil change intervals?
The only oil that will cause wear in an engine specified for 5W30 oil, would be using a 5W20. A 0W40 should be fine in a 5W30 spec engine. In fact, I think the W40 factor means it will protect the engine more in very hot weather. The 0W will work great for very low temperatures start, but a 5W synthetic oil is already more than enough in very cold weather starts. Even a 5W non synthetic still pours well at 0F. It think only in Siberia or Alaska a 0W will be really needed.

oragex, check your manual again, 5W30 is not exclusively recommended, in fact it's insufficient in temps above 86F, mountain driving or towing & they want you to use 10W30 or 5W40 instead, for towing a boat or camper through the mojave in summer I'd probably pour 15W40 or 10W50 in.
And let me assure you by own experience, 5W40 is not excessive in cold weather, it much rather is probably the thickest stuff working at all, as I was out of 0W40 after engine work last summer & poured in 10W40 semi-synthetic that I stock for my classics, as winter came early & harsh, one fine -15F morning a low oil pressure message reminded me that I was still running summer-tar in the sump.

Agree, the 5W30 has a more mid range usage. A 5W40 ( or 0W40) would be a good oil to run from cold weather to very hot summer days.

Thx for keeping this civil everyone.
Generally, oil change/brand/interval threads have to be safely redirected to less controversial topics like "will Palestinian sovereignty be respected by Israel on religious or political grounds and why?"

How is liqui moly? Just got an 04 xc70 and was thinking of getting liqui moly 0w30 and mann filter.benrk wrote:Annually, in the fall, somewhere near 10tkm, usually German brand filter like Mann, Mahle or Bosch, 0W40 full synthetic oil typically Liqui Moly, but also Mobil 1 (European car formula) or Castrol Edge (European made) if out of LM.
For the oil I'm mainly looking for VW 505.00 approval as it was an update to their oil specs after the 1.8T motors developed oil sludge issues with the earlier formular, sounds familiar?

If you research LM you'll find that they make excellent oils, but in the end it is just that, a good oil that you can just as much get from other quality brands, apart from being German & LM being the oil of choice for many gearheads in Germany, I also like that they take some social responsibility & pay good wages & are still producing in Germany, though the high end Castrol oils with approval for German makes are also made in (Western-)Europe, I just prefer a midsize company under local ownership to transnational corporations like ExxonMobil or BP (Castrol).shiloh51933 wrote:How is liqui moly? As mentioned earlier, 5W30 & 0W30 I would only use as a winter oil, NY state has a fair amount of hills & throughout the summer quite frequently temperatures above 86F, 5W40 would be the OE recommended viscosity for your use, 0W40 would be a treat for the wintertime, but given the rather mild winter temperatures near the coast probably not necessary.

I'm jumping into this topic so I don't have to start a new thread, I'm looking into using European made synthetic oils for our new xc70('04). We have a '96850glt which gets Mobil1 5w30 extended and I recently started a drain/fill process using FEBI ATF #29934, did 2 drain/fills so far. I did the drain/fill process about 25-30,000 miles ago w/Mobil 1 ATF. Anyway, I'm thinking about using Liqui Moly 0w30 engine oil and considering using Aisin or Mobil 3309 ATF. Here's the deal though, she'll be driven for extended periods of time 3-5days a week. I figure up to 4 hours straight driving local/city style driving, a little bit of Hwy. I do not beat up on my vehicles and neither does the wife Since the xc70 is going to see much heat should I go w/0w30 or 5w30?

Appreciate feedback, I'm going w/Liqui Moly 5w40-Mann filter, Aisin atf or Mobil3309, just gonna buy an oil change kit from FCP Groton. Thanks again.benrk wrote:If you research LM you'll find that they make excellent oils, but in the end it is just that, a good oil that you can just as much get from other quality brands, apart from being German & LM being the oil of choice for many gearheads in Germany, I also like that they take some social responsibility & pay good wages & are still producing in Germany, though the high end Castrol oils with approval for German makes are also made in (Western-)Europe, I just prefer a midsize company under local ownership to transnational corporations like ExxonMobil or BP (Castrol).shiloh51933 wrote:How is liqui moly? Yes, more heat => use 5W-30shiloh51933 wrote:Since the xc70 is going to see much heat should I go w/0w30 or 5w30?
At higher temperatures 5w would behave better than 0w
To the main thread: On my n/a 02S60 I use Castrol 10W-30 all year round; it is driven in hot climate zones all the time. Change oil + Mann or Mahle filter every 4kmi (add about a pint or two in between changes.)
Thanks
