I cleaned the area out the other day when I did the initial squirt off, it looked like someone sealed it up at the hose/hose connection. I put it on the radar for a future correction.

I just took another look at it and it appears to be weeping a bit of oil around it's base. If left to it's own, I'm sure it'll get worse and eventually piss me off!!

But Volvo again has me thoroughly confused... I looked for the part and what I have looks totally factory, but it doesn't match what I am seeing in the pics. This is what Volvo shows me. Isn't the red circle the top of the Cam Cover?
Image

This is what I have. There is a joint. There is a moulded in relief.

I think at minimum I am going to need the hose... but what is the correct part? Edit.... I found some real pics of the same part and it has the joint and the relief. Volvo Part 1271654, right? I'm not liking the looks of the current hose, so I'm ordering one and I'll replace it for cause. Which in itself looks to be quite fun!!! Oh Joy!!

Is there something I am missing here? Damn I hate not knowing!!

Cheers!

If that photo is your current hose, it is the correct part. As to what kind of shape it is in, I can't say from the photo, but it looks perfectly serviceable to me. The concern would be if it were split along its length at any point (which I've never seen) or leaking at either end (which I have, mostly due to poor hose clamp application).

Clean all that oil and keep an eye on everything in there. The hose looks fine from here, but you'd be the best judge of its condition.
If you end up replacing the PCV parts again (or even just that hose), make sure you attach the hoses the way jblackburn shows in his PCV DIY writeup (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=28487). The Volvo diagram is incorrect.

Hey BMDub!
It's a typical old hard hose. The part that worries me now that I have a bit more insight to it is what appears to be silicone holding it at the joint. Like possibly it parted due to hardening and someone put it back together?!?

I'm not anxious about redoing it as the PCV Service looks like a total PITA and even for just this hose to be replaced is a major undertaking. I'll have it in case I ever do something that I can access the lower clamp (alternator maybe?), but for the most part I'm going to leave it be unless I have to address it.

Like I said in the begining.... A VERY steep learning curve. Hopefully after this little set-back it'll be smaller, more controllable issues. Like ones the kiddo can handle! Cam Shaft Seals is a might out of the sub-novice realm!!!

Thanks for the advice and guidance!!

Compared to other guys on here, I'm pretty new to working on cars, but that's just because of my age. My V70 is my first car. Most jobs on this car I can handle no problem. I've done cam seals, dizzy cap,and rotor, oil change, timing belt, and PCV with some help. That's not a job to do alone... you need someone to yell at the car with!
I see where you're coming from, though. Wait on it until you have everything else taken care of, just keep an eye on it.

The PTC was mentioned earlier and was a mess when I was finding all my problems on my '98. It can be removed and cleaned and reinstalled with a little silicone and work fine, instead of replacing the entire tube. I would still question the PCV system as to a proper job being done by the PO, after all the other things you have found. Just be careful plugging up to many holes if you think there may be a bigger problem not found. Great if the RMS isn't leaking, but it could be weak from pressure stress on the system.
I went heavy on the engine bright cleaner and pressure washer until you could almost eat off the engine. Any oil was found and traced quickly.
If I can be of any help, I am not that far below Winston.
My driveway has had it's share of Volvo work done on it.
Noticed a water leak this morning that will be looked at this weekend. Hope to be a loose hose.

The PTC is the "Positive Temperature Coefficient" valve, and it's not a valve.
Near the turbo, right at the "bend" of the intake pipe, sits a black thingamajig, with the thick hose from the PCV going in the top, and the small hose from the right hand side of the manifold (left side if you're looking at it from the front) going in a smaller hole on the side. Opposite is an electrical connector. The PTC's job is to heat gases and BS from the manifold before these things are let back in through the turbo and the rest of the intake pipes and hoses.

The PTC is simply a conduit with a heating element in it, which turns on when our all knowing and all powerful ECUs think it appropriate. The passage, however, is rather small, and prone to clogging, so pop off the intake pipe from turbo and MAF, remove electrical connector, big hose on top and small hose on side from the PTC, and remove intake pipe assembly. Carefully remove (this is optional - in many cases, it's wise to leave an older PTC in the intake pipe, and clean it in situ, so as to not break stuff) the PTC from the intake pipe, and check condition. Clean and clear with appropriate cleaning tools (pipe cleaner, brush and lots of brake cleaner or other appropriate oil eating chemical :) ).

What he said.
It is one oily messy thing to deal with, at least on my car and it was plugged. Hard to get to with big hands and not always the right tool.
