Yeah. Did that. Car is still pulses a little. Diagnosing problems on a 20 year old car is a PITA. New OE axle is great

Hey if you don;t mind repeating: Is this the axle you got from a salvage yard that you have posted about a little while ago, or did you end up getting a different one?

Just always curious what people do when they need a P80 axle.

The one from the salvage yard is on my workbench. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I've got about $30 in it so its no big loss -its probably ok but..... It had a few things about it that was less than ideal and my time is more precious to me than my money (not worth the risk). I didn't want to do the job twice. The OE part came from the volvo dealer and cost me about $400. That will probably be my biggest expense for the volvo all year. I can deal with it. I definitely appreciate everyone's support and actually feel like I let the community down by not using the salvaged part. That said I have nearly no free time and selfishly chose the easier though more expensive path. My overhauled partwhich is sitting on my workbench would be a good deal for someone - its good enough but not quite perfect and I'm a perfectionist - sort of.

I wish I could determine the source of my pulsing. Its not much but it's still annoying.

Hey, a new axle for 400 obviously makes sense for your situation. You would have spent that much on a crap axle installation at the shop! Thanks for the info.

Exactly my analysis. OE ddealer part for the same price as a crap axle from anyone else. Here are the things wrong with the DIY overhaul. 1) One end was full of water and had been that way for about 10 years. The grease looked liked baby poop...grey-brown and runny. I didn't make the effort to clean it all out. I got as much out as possible by hand but didn't use any solvent. I just scraped it out and probably got 95% of it. Probably OK but it could have been much better. 2) In spite of trying, I lost track of the original positions of the ball bearings. While I doubt this matters much its another thing that's less than perfect. 3) All the ball bearings were in numbered cups and I knocked them over onto the floor - 3 foot fall onto concrete. Again probably OK but not ideal. 4) Lastly the cup on the outboard side had two of the tracks worn through the hard coating. The areas were tiny but too big for my taste. I guess I'll keep the part just in case I need it later. However I doubt I'll ever use it. My plan for the 98 V70 is to get rid of it in 2019 or 2020 when I get a Ford Ranger Diesel 4x4 crew cab pick up.

Don't worry about the wear tracks on CVs. They are really sturdy beasts. I drove VW CVs with pitted areas for 10,000s of miles
