I remember having Peterson vice grips and the quality was much higher. I actually sharpen the grip on the Irwin ones for a really bad turd

This thread is too funny although it's supposed to be about fixing sad severely abused Volvo cars. Calling them turds seems more like you are talking about something not European or American... Although every time I see the headline I can't help but laugh!!!! June

I had a summer construction job in high school. I was the helper for an old Swede named Anderson, and we were both working for a golf course contractor named Gunderson. A lot of big earth-moving machines. He was a good mechanic and all around tinkerer.

He'd look at a problem and say "Let me see here once yet Ollie!"

A highway scraper / grader broke off a battery post on this huge battery. He made a mold, wrapped it with wet rags, and poured melted lead on it to make a new one. Filed it down to fit the cable clamp.

We were supposed to change the rollers or dolly wheels or whatever they're called on a bulldozer track. We're under a damn bulldozer on bottle jacks - I was not happy. The bolt heads are like 3, 4" diameter. What kind of leverage can you put on that? And they are rusty and fused.

So he says, "Well, Ollie, time to get out the smoke wrench!" And we heated them up until a huge breaker bar could turn them, but mostly just cut them off with the torch.

A decade ago, I bought a much abused Mercedes diesel car (240D with manual 4 speed). It had been neglected in about every way possible, but it still ran. My wife and I called it TurdBird. She would not ride in it. In polite company, we called it TBird.
