FCP will only list it until 98 as per my thread above. It is not listed as a separate part for 99- on Volvo parts lists, but is the same part.

I had to take apart a few axles to check the dimensions were the same.

Oil like Kroil will only cat to subdue the noise long enough to identify it is the source of the noise. These need to be packed with grease to fix the noise. By the time they get noisy they are beyond saving.

Thanks for the offer. I plan to pull a 1999 axle from a junkyard to have as a spare. In the meantime, I'll manipulate it by hand. Might be hard to move it away from the carrier when it's held in place by the transmission on one side and the steering knuckle on the other.

I pulled both axles from a 1999 4 speed automatic transmission at a junkyard. When I did, ATF started slowly running out of the transmission's axle holes. It didn't seem to be coming from the seals at the edge but deeper inside. Will this happen to me when I pull the axles on my 2000 5 speed automatic?

I'm darn sure the bearing is causing the grinding. 100 miles after oiling it, it barely grinds, even with weight in the back. I can make it grind by accelerating firmly from a stop up a hill, but it's so much better. I may swap in the spare axle and see how it sounds. That would give me time to replace the bearing on my axle.

Yes you will loose some ATF….unless you plan ahead and slightly tip the car up on the right side rather than leveling it. Alternatively , measure the flange entry point on your axle and buy a rubber stopper to fit, and quickly plunge it in after axle removal. If you are changing the seal, this doesn’t work of course

It’s also a perfect time to schedule a 3.5 liter….drain, swap axle , fill ATF

Ooof…are axles on 1999 4 speed AT and 2000 5 speed the same?

Check this thread and maybe the images on skandix for guidance

Plan A..axle swap

Plan B bearing swap

Plan C… get some lithium grease in asyringneedle an inject into the bearing race through the seal. You could try this on car even. This is a really lightly loaded bearing

Thanks. I am in the middle of a series of transmission drain/fill, so I'll drain before doing the axle swap and fill after.

According to VolvoPartsWebStore, the right axle part 8251761 (was 8602610) fits FWD 1999, 2000, and up through 2004 for C70. Same is true for the short left axle part 8251760 (was 8602609). Agrees with your notes.

5 speed auto trans don't leak when the axles are pulled. So the dealer mechanics told me. I found the same when I swapped axles on a 5-speed auto NA I worked on.

Should add, when I was looking for a RH 5-speed auto axle they were really hard to find used. Erie Vo-Vo had only one which I got a few years back. Maybe things are better now.

Does this bearing sound bad to you? I made a video of me spinning the bearing by hand on the axle I pulled from a junkyard.
