Repairing a AW55-50SN Transmission in a 2001 V70
Re: AW55-50SN woes-easy to repair?
Hello...I am ready to drill the hole and destroy as much of my filter as I can. Could you tell me how precise I need to be with location? I saw that here the washer needed to be ground, so can we Drill in the flat area? Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Not a filter problem. My car didn't have any codes when the filter was clogged, however 2 years later I got codes for solenoid 2 or 3 (can't recall) and I gave the car to the giant crusher in the sky because of this and other issues (heater core, head gasket & brake controller)
If codes point directly to a particular solenoid then you should have that solenoid replaced or have a rebuilt valve body fitted.

That's right Abscate it was the case on my car.
The whining noise was pretty loud if you had the window open or if you had someone else rev the car in neutral. It was just like an electric motor sound.
I suppose someone unfamiliar with the sound of their own engine might dismiss it as just engine noise but I was pretty familiar with the natural sound of my T5.

What an amazing resource! I feel guilty stopping in to the forum so infrequently. Other than regular maintenance, my '05 XC70 has been a solid car. It has a bout 275k kms on it now, and has had the transmission flushed three times since I bought it at 144k. We were overseas on vacation, and my son drove the car for a while, and reported some bad shifting and whining sounds. Testing it this morning, it would barely shift into drive or reverse, and the loud whine that changes with engine speeds that had been faint for the last few months was now quite loud.
I'd been shopping for replacement vehicles this morning, planning to ditch this otherwise great car for parts. Now I'm going to have a go at this repair! Thanks to precopster, cuhfs, and everyone else involved.

OK, have Magnefine 3/8" filter on order. Here's the link for those that need it. Someone speak up if I ordered the wrong one, and I'll edit this post ASAP!
Magnefine 3/8" Tranny Filter
Will need to check my large tap stock, but I may not have anything big enough for the job. What are the thoughts on going up to something like M15x1.5? Here's a kit that has six bolts and a tap for 15 CanuckBucks.

I see from this thread that people are punching holes in the filter via the skewer method. In order to open the filter medium further, what about bending a hook in the end of the skewer, such that it catches on the filter material when being pulled back out? That might rip the filter open further, and possibly even pull some of the plugged filter material out the hole. I'll experiment with this idea tonight. I found a 3/8" NPT pipe tap in my toolbox, and plan to use a pipe plug like the one shown below to seal up the wound.

The transmission has been drilled, tapped, and filter poked. I was unable to pull any filter material out. It feels like a fine metal mesh to me, and by inserting and levering back and forth with a poker, I was able to hear the filter screen tear open. On first puncture, a large quantity of oil gushed out, seeming to confirm a plugged filter screen.
To flush any remaining metal chips out of the transmission, I've repeatedly poured 3 liters of diesel fuel down through the dipstick hole, allowing it to run out the newly drilled hole in the bottom of the transmission. As temps are cold in Canada, the ATF pours too slowly to get good flushing action, which is why I switched to diesel. The catch pan is examined after each flushing, and contaminants filtered out prior to pouring through again.
I plan to do a Gibbons flush immediately on startup, to again try to ensure a clean system prior to trying to drive the vehicle. The filter is due to arrive shortly, and the test drive will need to wait until that time. Fingers are crossed!
