2005 is a completely different high speed CANBUS car. You need the right wiring diagrams
start, but I don’t have any drivability issues when changing gears, which I read can be an indicator of a failing sensor. :x
Not a good diagnostic. Clutch switch is easily diagnosed with an ohmmeter. It inputs direct to the ECM. Make sure it firmly attached to the nipples in firewall and clutch arm , or it will cause an intermittent no crank condition like you describe!

It will not cause intermittent power failures like you describe

Hello,

My car is a 2005 S60R, 160,xxx miles.

I go to my car and try to start it but I get the message "Start Prevented, Try Again". I'm thinking the battery is low so I remove the battery. Trickle/Charge the battery in the garage. Couple of days later, I install the charged battery back in the car. Start the car. Everything works! I move my car and park it (street cleaning).

This is where the problem starts. I go back in the house and replace the 2032 batteries in both of my key fobs. Next day, I go to the car but nothing works. The car doesn't respond to either key fobs. Car doesn't start. There's no dash light. Only the headlights turn on (headlight switch is off), radio turns on but no sound, car seats move, and trunk lights turn on. I'm thinking the car battery is faulty and lost all of its charge overnight so I replace the car battery with a brand new AGM H8 battery. Still, problem persists.

I'm thinking the key programming was lost so I get out my VIDA to check. But VIDA cannot connect to the car. I get the following message:

Is it possible that the CEM went bad or is the immobilizer preventing connection? How can I program my keys if the VIDA can't connect? Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm lost, please help.

Hello
If vida doesn’t connect to your car, try to put vin # manually ,and then vehicle profile + diagnostic.

When you refitted your battery did you have the ignition key in Posn II? If not it may have damaged your CEM when re-connecting it. It may also explain your VIDA issue.

Are you getting 12V from the battery? There are large fuses back there which can blow although not typically with anything you have mentioned.

I have also “ car prevented to start” message , vida shows me this reading under immobilizer. Does car need to be programmed by volvo or is other choice? Thanks for any suggestions.

@Neil
I don't think the fuses blew when I refitted the battery because I was able to start the car and move it. It was when I changed the remote batteries then the problems started. However, that night is when the big storms started here in Northern California. I believe the water damaged my CEM because the front passenger side carpet was soaking wet and when I blew high pressure air into the CEM, I saw drops of water.

Sorry for the late response. The storms here have prevented me from working on the car. I was able to install the new antenna ring and still nothing. I believe the CEM was damaged from the rain water that leaked in. Unfortunately, I don't have the energy or money to keep investing into this car. Sadly, I think it's time for me to part ways. I will either sell it or junk it.

the problem started after changing the fob batteries, I'd change them back to the old batteries and see what happens.
Water in electronics will often do no damage of you leave it alone to evaporate or use a hair dryer to help it along.

My apologies to those people who have been waiting for an update. I got so frustrated that I didn’t touch the car for a few weeks. I eventually connected my fully charged good battery, and got the no-dashlights, no-start thing again. I called xemodex and was about to send them the CEM, ECU, and keys but I wanted to check if there were any codes before doing so. I looked at my earlier notes and decided to try to repeat a procedure.

With the battery negative disconnected, I removed fuse 25 (ignition) and 33 (fuel pump), inserted a key in the ignition and left it in position 0, then connected the battery, then installed fuse 25 and “bing” dash lights came on, then installed fuse 33, turned the key and it started right up. It has now started perfectly more than 20 times over the past four days (in my driveway because I don’t trust it). I took it for a spin to clean the rusty brakes but didn’t turn it off at any time on the drive. When I got home, I turned it off, and then it started again perfectly. So without doing anything other than replacing the starter motor, and re and re the ECU and CEM, and installing the fuses as described above, everything seems back to normal.

Could all of this been caused by the specific sequence of events described above not being followed?

Now my problem is getting the CEM back into its bracket. The clutch pedal makes it very difficult, and I’m disabled and can’t get on my back to stick my head under the dash and see what’s going on. I’ve spent more than an hour and feel completely defeated by what should be a three minute job. Anyone know someone near 94530 who could reinstall the CEM into the bracket without ripping me off?
