Re: Climate unit blower replacement
Hi, thanks, I worded that badly. Its a '95 850 Turbo with automatic climate control. What I meant was, until recently, if I turned it manually to max air (e.g. demisting), it would blow with full power. That function of the blower is not now working. e.g. with cold weather at present, if I set at 25 c. fan only blows gently to warm the car.

Hello everyone and thank you for the helpful topic
...
I have the electronic control unit on my car and with the cold weather I noticed it almost does not blow hot air through the lower vents:

I turned the power to maximum and it started making noise, but not enough air flow.
I thought the electronic control in the middle does not work, but when I turn it, it changes something as the noise changes.
Also, when I turn it completely down ( @ six o'clock for the floor air flow) it blows from the top too
...
So, probably my air ducts are dirty or my blower motor is exhausted?
Please help.

Now that hot weather is here suddenly, like 38c, my fan seems stuck on lowest speed only...still working and cooling car, but very gradually. Or does a fan effect come just with air-con on? Makes no difference 'auto' or 'full manual power'.
I guess if there's no boost its the fan has given up??

Marginal,
You problem is likely with the mode damper - on an ECC that is easy to get to through the glove box. Remove the damper motor and inspect the shaft, it is common for the end of the shaft to split.
Replacing the damper flap is a huge job, the entire dash needs to come out to do it but it can usually be repaired in place by either sliding a bushing over the end of the shaft or wrapping the shaft with a fine - 22 gauge to 24 gauge - solid copper wire. In the end it is much like the joints on a fishing rod are reinforced.
EDIT: I just found your repair post - well done.

I replaced with new blower motor that has been in my garage for a few yrs.
incredible difference on my 95 850! It is not that hard to drive the cage off of shaft, but next time I will just but the whole assembly.
Thanks to Ozark Lee for useful writeup and pics!

You can take it apart more than once and try to fix somethingmarginal wrote:Hello everyone.
Does anyone have an idea how to disassemble and lubricate the fan's shaft so it starts turning freely?
Thanks.
that sounds like it's well beyond it's "sell by" date,
or just buy a new one and only do the job once.
I mean, C'mon...You live in Montreal and winter's comin'...
You do NOT wanna mess with this when it's cold out. Never fun.

Hi BEJinFbk and thanks for you reply
...
I forgot to explain: Everything seems to be working OK with my blower.
I am asking about lubricating because I bought a spare second hand blower and when I turn the fan, it does not turn very easily.
I guess this is more clear now

My Volvo problem is that the fan runs at max speed as soon as the car is started. After reading this post and others, it seems that the power stage (ECC) has failed and I need to replace it. Can I just get it from Pepboys or AdvancedAutoParts?
